OK guys so as of late ive been in a real desire to upgrade my pc entirely, and the cpu is my last step.

my specs currently are:

CPU: ryzen 5 2600

GPU: AMD 5700 xt

16 GB Ram

1TB SSD

PSU: EVGA 750W

Motherboard: MSI B450 Gaming Plus

what should i upgrade my CPU to?

i was thinking maybe i7-8700k or maybe even the 9700k but im not too sure.

my budget is $300-$350 USD but may be a little more if it worth it.

Thanks in advance for all the suggestions! ?

you need a new mobo if your gonna go intel.

i would go ryzen 7 2700x, it has 8 cores 16 threads and has hyper threading and will be a bit better for not to expensive

AMD blackout rig

cpu: ryzen 5 3600 @4.4ghz @1.35v

gpu: rx5700xt 2200mhz

ram: vengeance lpx c15 3200mhz

mobo: gigabyte b550 auros pro

psu: cooler master mwe 650w

case: masterbox mbx520

fans:Noctua industrial 3000rpm x6

For any 3xxx cpu you’re going to need to do a bios update, and look up whether or not that mobo can take the extra draw of a 3xxx cpu.  My suspicion is it will be fine, but you never know.

What speed and cas ram do you have?

Also what cooler?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Ah.  Not a problem. Everyone is a noob at something and everyone starts out a noob.  Trying to think of an easy way to check this in windows, but all my stuff is too old.  I got no clue.  Someone less noonish than me about win10 can probably say (please say btw)

AMD likes its ram fast.  The newer AMD likes it ram even faster.  Fast for ram means big ghz numbers and low cas numbers.  There are limits though.  The mobo will have a limit and the CPU will have a limit. Ryzen 3xxx has a sweet spot of 3600mhz cas16.  Your mobo probably can’t do that.  Under 3000mhz ryzen 3xxx starts to get petulant.  It will still work though.

im being lazy and haven’t looked up your mobo so I don’t know if it can even handle the power of a 3xxx chip.  It might not.

the mhz number is ram speed

if you search up your ram then put "mhz" it should bring up a number in in the mid 2000's if you have reeeaaalllyyyy bad ram to mid 3000"s if you have good ram

if you open task manager, hit performance, then hit memory it will bring up some stats in the bottom right and theres a "speed" with a number that has mhz next to it thats your speed

I have this software on my pc that tells me like stats basically how my computer is running and i look at it from time to time while im gaming and my cpu clock speed is running at 3700-3900mhz while im gaming but idk if that is normal or not lol

@scuff gang

mmm.. mostly.  Cas matters too. Really fast ram with really bad cas isn’t really that fast.  You can get really cheap high ghz ram but the cas is awful because all they did was take cheap ram and boost the ghz at the expense of cas.

i dont understand why though.. i have 2 8gb sticks of the corsair vengence lpx series and i dont quite remeber the other ones..

the guy at best buy told me that those could run at 2400 mhz and i figured that it could only get better than my other ones

It might have been.  It’s not impossible it’s really good for that motherboard, except @scuff gang says it isn’t and I tend to believe it.

Dangit I gotta look the board up now....

Update:  looked it up. Yeah, I know now why I didn’t know about this board.  Best Buy guy hosed you.  That mobo will run much faster ram. 3466 out of the box, 3600 with tweaking. (Not going to tweak it)

mobo also doesn’t have the power(VRM in this case) for a 3800x

if you’re itching to buy something get some 3200mhz cas16 ram. It will be nice and expensive and it will make your computer go faster without hurting anything.

make sure your ram is in the right slots, if it is in the wrong slots it will cut your speed in half
