Opinions on this build?

Go to solution Solved by 3 Lions,

MOBO: ASUS TUF X299 MARK 1 Socket 2066
CPU: i7-7820X Octa-Core 3.6 Ghz LGA2066 Socket
CPU COOLER: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Black Edition 42 CFM
RAM: Kingston HyperX FURY 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 2666MHz HX426C16FB2K2/16
PSU: Corsair TX-M Series TX850M 850W Gold (CP-9020130)

STORAGE: some cheap SSD + HDD, doesn't matter

CASE: Undecided

GRAPHICS CARD: Undecided

Are the components compatible with each other? I used PC Part Picker and it said the PSU does not have some 4-pin ATX thingy.

Opinions?

What about a Ryzen based system?

This build will destroy that build quite handily, and the motherboard and CPU are both much cheaper. You lose out on quad channel sure, but you gain support for much higher memory speeds to compensate.

also if you want a high end cooler:

you can ignore that, PCpp says that but an 8 pin CPU power cable can deliver so much power that it doesn't matter.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

You got mor PSU than you need wattage wise. By a lot. There’s no GPU in there either so you’d be running off internal graphics.  It certainly won’t play video games like this.  What is the use case of this machine?

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Lol, thanks. Looks better than mine. Is this AMD Ryzen CPU better/worse than the i7 equivalent btw?

Depends on what you want to do.  Ryzen is slower single thread for single thread.  It’s got more cores per dollar and those cores tend to multithread better.  In general currently price/performance is better for ryzen currently.

If you want something a bit cheaper, this is also a good option...

AMD has caught up to intel, offering relatively the same performance for far less cost. This Ryzen 7 3700X is roughly equivalent to a core i9 9900K. (Unless you use it for a non gaming workload that uses AVX 512)

3rd gen doesn't have worse single thread, maybe 3%?

Speaks to definition of “worse” it’s a fair point.  They’re reasonably close to equal.

Yeah I was thinking that myself but the inital list had that PSU, sometimes it's a bit difficult dragging someone away from a part that they are already sold on (if you know what I mean).

Sorry I don´t like it at all. Putting so much money into the cpu while shitting (saving) on the rest is not good. No need for me to add my own recommendation as here are already good ones

Well that Ryzen build that @LinusTechTipsFanFromDarlo has posted looks pretty solid. I know my build is shit.
