That sounds like a cool idea, I just wouldn't count on that cooler fitting in the 250d

I always dreamed about doing a 100% silent apu build with a passive air cooler and no fans at all in an open air case, just not so sure how well that would work out....

You can actually do it. There are quite a few options.

Thoughts? Ideas? What you would do for a build like this?

Check the OC3D review, Tom wasn't even able to fit a Asus DCUII GTX 780 (or was it 780ti?). The top heatpipe was conflicting with the roof of the case. the NH-D14 is taller than it, so it won't fit.

I would recommend a NH-C14, that will surely fit, but I don't know how much air it will be able to intake, as the top of the case is a window.

You are probably best off by getting a 240mm AiO liquid cooler.

I was gifted a NH-D14 tonight, and I'm pondering the concept of making an ultimate silence build without sacrificing performance

My idea so far

250D (if the cooler fits)

NH-D14 (low noise adapters)

I5 4670k

8GB Kingston HyperX

256GB SSD

BeQuiet PSU

Thoughts? Ideas? What you would do for a build like this?

So you got me to thinking. How could one get really close to silent and still have a powerful small system. With no budget this is what I came up with.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU:  Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($275.00 @ PCCaseGear)

CPU Cooler:  Noctua NH-D14 65.0 CFM CPU Cooler  (Purchased For $0.00)

Motherboard:  Asus MAXIMUS VI GENE Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($269.00 @ CPL Online)

Memory:  Corsair Vengeance LP 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory  ($215.00 @ PCCaseGear)

Storage:  Crucial M500 480GB 2.5" Solid State Disk  ($385.00 @ CPL Online)

Video Card:  EVGA GeForce GTX 780 3GB Video Card  ($699.00 @ PCCaseGear)

Case:  Corsair 350D Window MicroATX Mid Tower Case  ($149.00 @ PLE Computers)

Case Fan:  Noctua NF-P12 PWM 120mm  Fan  ($27.00 @ CPL Online)

Power Supply:  XFX XTR 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply  ($149.00 @ PLE Computers)

Operating System:  Microsoft Windows 8.1 - OEM (64-bit)  ($115.00 @ CPL Online)

Other: NZXT Kraken G10 GPU Bracket Red  ($35.00)

Other: Corsair Hydro Series H55 CPU Cooler ($85.00)

Total: $2403.00

(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

(Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-02-08 14:14 EST+1100)

The H55 goes in the front of the case as intake with the NF-P12 fan replacing stock. (Might have to remove the 3.5" drive bays.) It cools the GTX 780 using the G10 adapter. I was actually looking for an Nzxt X40 but couldn't find one for sale in AUS.

I know you could fit a passively cooled Intel Atom motherboard. (And stick an R9-290X in there too.)

What a nice gift the build seems great. Love to see a 250d build :P

Bottle neck would be so big we could call it a guillotine.

Well, it would be a pretty efficient mining rig wouldn't it? (Because the CPU and stuff would barely take any power.)

.

The NH-D14 won't fit in the 350D either.

Or maybe it would, but I wouldn't risk it. Fitting a 160mm cooler in a case with 160mm cooler clearance doesn't seem like a good Idea to me. You could use the NH-C14, but that probably performs slightly less in comparison.

"Large CPU coolers such as Phanteks’ PH-TC12DX can be housed in the 350D without problems. We measured the maximum clearance as 165mm, meaning that the market’s highest performance air coolers in the Noctua NH-D14 and Phanteks PH-TC14PE can fit inside the 350D without interference."

Ok, I was wrong, would like to see some pictures though.

But wow, that has to be really close to the side window.

EDIT: can't find any pictures at all, I guess I just have to trust that guy.

The NH-C14 won't fit. The heatsink is 105mm tall and the 250D only fits up to 94mm.

Without the fan on the top (low profile mode), it's shorter than a graphics card, it should fit :/

I didn't check the specifications of the case though.

So only closed loop AiOs work in the case? :(

Actually, I noticed the 94mm spec only applies when you're using an optical drive. If you're not, the clearance is ~145mm so it should fit if you don't use a 5.25" drive.
