High end build when next gen cpu/graphics cards are 6 months away?

Figured this is the most appropriate subforum to discuss, and I'm itching to build a new ultimate gaming rig now that I've got a fancy new screen on the way. 

 

How would you guys decide on parts when the community can be reasonably certain that legitimate new generation graphics cards and Cpus are on the horizon relatively near? 

 

Now that I'm writing this, it wouldn't only apply to high end builds since the entire product stack usually gets a price cut when new lines launch so really everyone might need to consider waiting. 

 

In my own case I've researched out all the parts I want for a 9900ks + Kingpin 2080Ti rig and am itching to click the checkout button (not just because of the new monitor but also I just love building PCs) but all these recent announcements about Ampere cards in June next year (7 months away) and likely Intel 10nm desktop chips on the new LGA 1200 platforms have me second guessing. 

 

Obviously AMD is rocking the Cpu world right now, with the only instance of Intel still being a better choice is max performance in games, and we will likely see some good competition for Nvidia with 7nm ray-tracing cards from them around the same time as 30x0 ampere Nvidia launch so I can see the argument for waiting if you don't need to upgrade or whatever. 

 

Then again, not waiting means I can be enjoying the best possible gaming experience from now until that time, and really we all know that PC parts are always a waiting game... If you just keep waiting, there will always be new better, faster, shinier stuff "coming soon". 

 

What do you guys think?

Don't forget about Intel's GPU.

But, if you're waiting that long for something better, you're always going to be waiting.

yeah just finished watching the Ryzen 3950x reviews, it is getting dangerously close to matching the 9900ks at gaming performance. Looks like if all you want to do is game, that is still the chip to have but if you want to do anything else at all, there's just no good reason to go with Intel for the time being.

 

You're probably right, I may as well just pull the trigger... to be fair I'm sure I'll be happy with a direct-die 9900ks, water cooled Kingpin 2080Ti and some fast DDR4 so I probably should just go for it. 

As you said, tech is always advancing, and if we just keep waiting because something newer/better is right around the corner we'll never get to enjoy life.
