Should I upgrade 3770k to 4770k

Go to solution Solved by Akolyte,

if its only going to cost an extra $20 from the selling price for your 3770k to the 4770k, then I say maybe...  Haswell can get hot hot hot which is not a problem for you but even if you do upgrade you would need to switch out your motherboard, and get a cheaper non-ROG one I would advise (unless you need any specific features). Haswell also has no noticeable speed boost over Ivy bridge, so keep that in mind.

My current setup is a Maximus V Formula with an i7 3770k. I got an offer from a good friend who is super nice to take my board and processor, and pay for my new processor (4770k).  I will purchase a new mobo. So far the only changes are: i7 3770k changes to i7 4770k and Maximus V Formula changes to Maximus VI Formula.  Is the performance upgrade worth the effort to tear down and re-build?

I use xbox one for gaming, and i only play Diablo 3 on this machine.  Plus Outlook and facebook :)

I'm a huge ROG fan.  My avatar probably gave it away.

No it doesn't worth to upgrade from 3770k to 4770k. Difference in performance is very little. I wouldn't do that. 4770k is little better (very little), but it can't be overclocked as good as 3700k.

Only if you can sell your old mobo and CPU for a profit.

I can be a cynical a**hole at times. I apologize if I cause any offence at those time. I also occasionally have issues communicating my point. Extreme introversion + Photographic memory + Some other things.

The performance gain is near nothing, it's not worth it. If anything buy some red RAM to match your system instead.

the only red ram i could find is too tall and touches my h80i.  It's 16gb blue in there right now.

No, it's totally not worth it. it's not even worth it to go from 2600K to 4770K IMHO

Totally agree. I have a 2700k in my desktop and I've used a 4770k at a friends. You can't tell the difference.

Especially for what the OP uses it for.

However, if he's buying your cpu, you only have to pay for the motherboard, and you're helping out your friend with his build, sounds like a winning situation all around.

I like new things.

You won't see an improvement, but your friend might with his build.

He is purchasing the 4770k in exchange for my 3770k and mobo.  I will have to cough up $309 for the VI Formula.  I like new stuff too.  It was bad timing, 2 months after I completed this build, the 4770k was released.  I missed it by 2 months

It's rather pointless, but having such rig and playing mainly on XBone is even more pointless.

Never trust my advice. Only take any and all advice from me with a grain of salt. Just a heads up.

Adata xpg OC Series. It's red, it's low profile and Different sizes at different Speeds are available :)

And I wouldn't do it. You get almost no performance improvement but pay 200$ for it? Only if you have to much money and want to help a good bud out with his build but even then...

I printed out the part list from pcpartpicker when i planned this build.  The guy at Canada Computers couldn't stop laughing.  He also couldn't believe this was for Diablo.  i wanted to do 2x 7870 in crossfire, but he talked me out of it
