Hi Peeps!

Buildings a small office server in the coming weeks. It'll be running several VMs - File/Print Server, development env, some database servers, Plex(maybe?), and some other non-essential random VMs. Aside from the file server, I don't mind loosing the rest.

Tentative specs are as follows

CPU: Ryzen 2700 (cores > IPC)

RAM: 32GB (16x2) G SKill 3200

Mobo: Gigabyte B450 Aorus M

GPU: anything that's laying around the house

PSU: EVGA 500BV

Storage:

  • Primary: 1x 500GB Samung 970 Evo (high IOPs, VMs will be stored here; not sure if this is overkill)
  • Primary: 2x 250GB Samsung 970 EVO [RAID1] -OS and DBs
  • VMs: 2x 2TB Seagate Barracuda [RAID1]
  • Secondary Storage: 2x Iron Wolf 4TB [RAID1] - will prolly setup storage pass through. only file server VM will have access to this.

OS: Hyper V Server.

Point taken.

Will x2 vs x4 be noticable in this instance? All of the boards I've seen in this price range has the 2nd M.2 at only x2.

Nah. Not really. It's still way faster than SATA and even that is fast enough for most VMs, even database servers. If you can, run the database on the SSD array.

PC Specs - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D MSI B550M Mortar - 32GB Corsair Vengeance RGB DDR4-3600 @ CL16 - ASRock RX7800XT 660p 1TBGB & Crucial P5 1TB Fractal Define Mini C CM V750v2 - Windows 11 Pro

Updated original post.

Smaller SSD in RAID1 (Samsungs are expensive)

Added HDD RAID1 for non intensive VMs

Got it.

you might be interested in how stupidly cheap the 12 core 1920x is atm. tho you will end up spending extra on the cooler and the motherboard.

Unfortunately, 1st gen threadripper is out of stock and the second hand market here in the Philippines is AWFUL. 4790k's still go for 100-115USD.

I still see 4790Ks go for close to €200 which is retarded. Some people are just Intel fanboys I guess. I'd pick even a 9400F over one of those any day of the week, let alone a R5 3600.

That seems like a lot to ask of a desktop part.  For such a use case I would start with a minimum of 16 cores.

Load is bust-y. 2700 is lots for my current needs tbh. just found a retailer selling it for only 175$..
