i9-9900K/KS

Sveiny

Hello,

I need some assistance with choosing a new CPU.

I am currently running an i5-8600K with an ASUS ROG Strix Z370-E Gaming motherboard. I am looking to upgrade my CPU to an i9-9900K/KS.

Will the i9's work ok on this Z370 board or will I require to get a new Z390 chipset board?

With this I run an ASUS ROG Strix RTX 2070 with 32 GB DDR4 with 3200MHz.

I am also worried about bottlenecking, anyone that has experience with this?

I would appriciate any help ?

Best regards,

Sveiny

Yes, the 9900K will run on your motherboard, as long as you're on the latest or on a fairly recent BIOS version.

In what way are you worried about bottlenecking?

Hello @Mateyyy,

I am worried about that this CPU is to powerful and the GPU will struggle to keep up.

How about the newly released KS version? Is that also going to run, is it worth picking up the KS version?

Is there any preformance diffrence between Z370 and Z390?

I’d say you won’t be running 5ghz overclocked in that board. Would suggest perhaps going to z390, higher end board, if you are going for a 9900k(s)

Hello @Stormseeker9,

Will the ASUS ROG STRIX Z390-E work ok, or is this a bad board? I require Wi-Fi antenna option connectors and two M.2 slots atleast. If you have any suggestions I'd appriciate it.

You really shouldn't worry about your CPU being "too fast". While the 9900K can handle quite a lot more than a 2070, it will be a good pairing and will offer a great gaming experience (can confirm as I'm running myself a 9900K and a 2070). When bottlenecking is a problem is when you're dealing with a CPU bottleneck (when your CPU can't keep up with your GPU), as then you start noticing stuttering and other similar issues.

The KS will also run on your motherboard, but I don't think it's really worth going for it, unless you find a particularly good deal on one (which is pretty unlikely), as you'll notice no difference between it and the K in day to day usage, especially while gaming with the 2070 (or probably even two 2080TIs in SLI). Any average 9900K will easily hit 4.7GHz on all cores, which is more than you wiil really need, and what you should be looking for with your motherboard, as I wouldn't suggest going 5GHz+ unless your board has a particularly beefy VRM setup. Also, if you don't have one already, I'd suggest getting a pretty beefy cooler, regardless of whether you go with the 9900K or the KS, as these chips do kick out a good amount of heat (at least an Noctua NH-U14S or be quiet! Dark Rock 4).

And no, there will be no performance difference between Z370 and Z390.

@Mateyyy

no performance difference per se, but z390 has ac wifi and usb gen 3.1.

for a 9900k I would go with that z390 board I suggested due to having far superior Vrm cooling compared to his I current board. Higher  OC can probably be applied to. End of day depends on silicon too

Yours (Z370-E) is a good board, no need to change it unless you know what you will be doing with this CPU )

As for the 5GHz+ OC, I don't think that people who have skills to do it ask others to choose the PC parts for them?

I currently run an NZXT Kraken X62 cooler for my i5-8600K, pretty sure this will keep up fine with the i9-9900k

Regarding that motherboard, this is what I found find available in Norway - ASRock Z390 Taichi Ultimate, it is slightly more expensive than the Z390-E board I posted. We're talking roughly 20 bucks.

I am waiting for Black Friday to come around, and I will depend on the deals then when it comes to motherboard I guess.

I don't do much overclocking, I've barely touched it now and run my CPU at 4.6 currently at stable. Could probs have pushed it even further but I am not advanced within this field to be honest.

It is not that I don't know what I am doing, this was more seeking other people's experience and tips.

The KS is the K's more expensive new stepping edition, basically a more premium model with the same feature set, only more potential. I won't go for that

Tho I dont think you can even bottleneck an RTX 2070 with an 8600k. @LukeSavenije You have the 8600k right?

The i9 9900ks is a great CPU if you are building from scratch, you are set on intel, and you want the best gaming experience possible. Additionally, the KS can do everything Ryzen can do and the more recent benchmarks have proven its the most powerful 8 core CPU you can buy. Now I will preface this, the 3900x is probably the best all around for a new build at the same price or less; however, the 9900KS can do the same things just a little bit slower in more core/multi-threaded hungry applications.

This is the issue though. The KS really only shows you value if you're pairing it with at least a 2080 super (id recommend a 2080 ti) and you have a high refresh monitor. If you're sticking with the 2070 it would be best to just get the standard 9900k and save your money.

If you don't care about my opinion.....I mean it is your money. lol

You may want to consider looking into the Gigabyte motherboards especially the Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master LGA 1151. Also, you can score an i9 9900ks for a reasonable price online through Best Buy when they are in stock. I'd check early in the morning and throughout the day as they sell out quick. I take all the opinions I get. I did look into that motherboard from before already and it seems to be a really good board. As of now I am waiting for black friday to come around and then will have a look at the deals I can get. I am planning to stick with my 2070 as it is only a year old and to be honest, it works just fine for my use right now, but potentially it will be upgraded at some point down the line, maybe in a copule of years, dependent on how it keeps up with new titles that gets released in the years coming.

Sounds good. The KS is in stock @ Best Buy at the moment by the way. $524.99 isn't bad considering the standard 9900k is retailing at $471.99. Yeah the 2080 ti is all about playing at ultra settings without losing FPS. It also depends on what Monitor you are using. I use a super ultra wide so a 2070 won't work for me even a 2080 ti holds me back at times.
