Asrock or MSI?

Xiee

Hi guys, just wanted your feedback on some motherboards. I'll be upgrading in a few weeks and I'm trying to decide which motherboard is best.

At the moment I'm split between two motherboards:

- Asrock B450m Steel Legend

- MSI B450m Mortar Max

I'm doing a mATX build. I already have all the parts except for these two motherboards. I just wanted to know everyone's opinions on both boards since I'm hearing both good and bad stuff from both boards. I basically do gaming, some video editing (Vegas Pro) and some graphics editing (Photoshop, SAI). I'll also use this system for work which includes me using VM/Virtualbox.

What would you guys pick and why? Thanks in advance!

Never MSI.

I've had nothing but issues with their motherboards.

Their BIOS screens also tend to be a little behind everyone else's.

Have to disagree.

only ever had experience with a B450 tomahawk Max And a gaming pro carbon, but have always been working flawless and no bios ‘issues’

@Xiee out of those two, go with the MSI.

Ah yeah. I've had 7 MSI motherboards. 6 have had issues.

My dad's had 9, almost all had issues.

Pretty piss poor track record.

And I’ve had 2 boards and no issues. MSI B450 boards are pretty decent and have solid Vrm cooling.

I love both companies, my very first mobo was Asrock, now I'm with msi.

But the mortar is superior. Much better for overclocking, better vrm, power delivery. I would pick the mortar

Life is really challenging. I don't always suceed: )

MSI is B tier hardware at best. Historically they've sold hardware that they've cut corners on, and then cheated benchmarks when they had the opportunity across multiple hardware lines.

If you can't afford AsRock (which is A+ tier by comparison) or Asus (A tier) and you're willing to risk it, just go with what your heart desires.

If You don't plan to OC the CPU to the ultimate, then either will do. Buddy runs steel legend with 2600& 1.38 volt overclock, never complained about vrm temps . Might be a problém in less well ventilated case though

And the Steel legend is cheaper, at least in my country. ~90 usd, whereas mortar is ~110

Life is really challenging. I don't always suceed: )

Thanks for all the feedback.

I'm still a bit undecided at this point. I've seen reviews that MSI has very good VRMs. I do a bit of overclocking, but I just mostly use Ryzen Master for that if needed.

I've looked at other boards as well. Gigabyte Aorus M and Asus TUF Plus Gaming which are available in my country. Do you guys think any of these two are worth getting?

Well, no. Both Steel Legend and Mortar are better choices.

What is your location? Or a link to some webshop? What CPU would you want to use?

Agree on this. OP also mentioned that he wants to OC, if I read correctly somewhere in this thread; then definitely go with the Mortar.

I currently have a Ryzen 1600, but I'm upgrading to a Ryzen 3600 by the end of the month before I buy a motherboard.

I'm in the Philippines, I mostly buy from local shops and tend to avoid purchasing online since the local shops here have additional warranties on top of the manufacturer warranty.

Also had my bad days with MSI, from what I've read the Steel Legend is a solid motherboard.
