Should I wait?

Hey Linus Tech Tips,

 

I'm looking to build a high-end rig that will play AAA games at 60+ FPS in 1440p. Should I wait for AMD to release their new high end GPUs that will compete with the RTX 2080 cards? My general budget would be a little under two grand, and AMD hardware seems to offer comparable if not sometimes better performance for a lower price than Intel and NVIDIA. What do you all think?

AMDs top end has been rather meh for the past few generations. I wouldn't hold my breath.

Off topic question, but would I want to get 32 GB of RAM for gaming?

Depends how you use your pc. If you have a lot of stuff open in the background, sure. Right now RAM is cheap. I'd get 32GB if I was building new right now.

Would I want to get the two 16 GB sticks or the four 8 GB sticks?

the high end amd gpu still doesn't have release date, so i wouldn't wait, if you want a 5700xt, go for it, as mentioned, black friday might benefit you

 

if you find a deal on a rtx2070,that would be great too

Would basically everything run at over 60 FPS on a 5700xt in 1440p?

no, not anything, either with that or the rtx

 

no gpu guarantees that, ever, because no one knows if the settings you choose in the game you buy will give you the results you want now or in the future, each game at each resolution behaves differently, so no guarantees

 

your chances are higher of achieve that resolution and fps by using a rtx2080 or higher, even then, is not guaranteed in the future to remain like that for 2 or 3 years

What if you're running games like The Witcher 3, Borderlands 3, Destiny 2, Jedi: Fallen Order, Titanfall, Apex Legends, CoD, etc. on 1440p at high to ultra settings?
