Need advice on setting up a second router.

Ravenbear

Due to the size of my house and the number of devices linked to the network I need a second router. DO I need to get a second cable modem?  I tried it with one modem but could not figure it out.

Thanks.

no you don't need a second modem / router.

what you need is a wireless distribution system / wireless repeater.

go from the same brand and it should be a straightforward installation.

Ryzen 5700g @ 4.4ghz all cores | Asrock B550M Steel Legend | 3060 | 2x 16gb Micron E 2666 @ 4200mhz cl16 | 500gb WD SN750 | 12 TB HDD | Deepcool Gammax 400 w/ 2 delta 4000rpm push pull | Antec Neo Eco Zen 500w

No second modem needed. Acutally the only way you can have a second modem on your account generally is if one if being used for internet and the other is for voice. Besides that one modem per account. You would litterally have to open up a secondary internet account at full price to use a second modem.

Your best bet is to run Ethernet to where the dead zone is and install a wireless access point. You could also install a swtich if you need more Ethernet ports in that general area. If Ethernet is not an option then look in to power line and moca adapters. Moca being the better of the two.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Thanks for the advice. It helps a lot.  It also happens that I need a phone line in my office so maybe I can lump it all together.

Even if you need a  phone in your office. The second modem would not support DATA. It would be a voice only thing. Period. So you would still need to figure a way to get WiFi or Ethernet to your office from the primary modem.
