So I just picked up a i7 8700k pcu to upgrade from an i5, this computer was prebuilt and I’m finally able to upgrade it slowly. Anyways I have tried everything from updating my bios to checking wires and changing plugs and I get some lights and the fans spin for about 2 seconds before it stops again, I’m not the best with computers so if anyone could help out at a very dumbed down level I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! Also I did check if my motherboard was compatible, and it says it was.

If you had a 6 core 6 thread i5 the 8700K wouldn't be worth the $300 upgrade anyways, but what's the chipset on the motherboard?

Could get a Ryzen 7 8 core + B450 board for the same price as the retail i7 just an fyi.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Like I said I’m kinda new to the whole pc thing and this one came prebuilt so I don’t quite know what the chipset is.

Reading the pcu itself it says intel core i5

i5-7400.

That means it isn't compatible with the 8700. It's the same exact socket, but it's just not compatible. Return the CPU to the store.

The name of the motherboard should be somewhere on it if you want to provide a picture.

Otherwise do you only need the PC for gaming? If so what is your monitor resolution/refresh rate? That i5 is just fine for like 60hz gaming anyways.

Also what's your GPU?

The best CPU you could put in there is an i7 6700 or 7700. 8th gen is unfortunately not compatible

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Primary PC:

i7 8086k - EVGA Z370 Classified K - G.Skill Trident Z RGB - WD SN750 - Jedi Order Titan Xp - Hyper 212 Black (with RGB Riing flair) - EVGA G3 650W - dual booting Windows 10 and Linux - Black and green theme, Razer brainwashed me.

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

How many watts do I needATX 3.0 & PCIe 5.0 spec, PSU misconceptions, protections explainedgroup reg is bad

Now hang on, I'm pretty sure you can totally get a hacked Chinese bios that will support 8th gen chips.

But hat motherboard is probably really low end for the 8700K anyways.

Within reason, the best choice is a CPU that's fully supported. I wouldn't bother going out of my way to get a custom BIOS for an OEM motherboard just for a 6 core i7, especially not as my first ever PC upgrade

Yeah sure, the guy who couldn't even buy a compatible CPU for his system and has no idea how to figure out even the chipset his motherboard has is totally going to successfully flash some random Chinese BIOS.?‍♀️

Just because it fits it does not mean it will work.

I see two options:

1st: Return the CPU, there is a chance they will not take it back because it is now considered used.

2nd: Buy and install a new compatible 300 series motherboard.

There is your problem.

8000 and 9000 series Intel CPUs is only compatible with 300 series based motherboards (e.g. Z390, Z370, H310, etc, etc).

6000 and 7000 series only works on 100 series and 200 series motherboards (e.g. Z170, Z270, H270, H110, etc).

Even though they are all "LGA 1151" socket, the older one being LGA 1151 "version 1" and the newer ones on the 300 series boards being LGA 1151 "version 2".

Yes, it's stupid...

The computer OP has is a pre-built system; probably going to be a pain in the @$$ to swap the motherboard, especially if it does not use a standard ATX format.

Best option is your option #1

@Puckmyface

Return the i7-8700K (if you still can), and grab a new/used:

  • i7-7700K
  • i7-7700
  • i7-6700K
  • i7-6700

There are i7-7700T and i7-6700T, but they are the low-power versions, and run at a slightly lower frequency than their non-K and K siblings.
