Help Choosing CPU

Ryzen Circlejerk aside,

Get a 9600k with a full sized Noctua and a board of your choice. Grab a nice 16gb kit. Ask around which Intel boards are the best for O/Cing. Toss this setup in a cheap case with a decent PSU and be done with it. There isn't much the 9600k won't drive at 5ghz. It's a great value, and unless you're trying to open 10 other applications while you game and stream there is little advantage to going with Ryzen. Intel is tried, tested and true. Go on Userbenchmark youtube Videos and check out the Ryzen vs Intel benchmarks. Look at the 0.1% lows on Ryzen. Ryzen is not a stable CPU at all in games, the FPS fluctuates like crazy. Not my idea of a party.

I have been looking to buy a new CPU for quite some time now as I only have an i5 4460. I have a 1060 6gb aswell. The CPU is without a doubt bottlenecking my performance as I constantly run at 100% CPU usage while GPU is much lower. I am unsure, however whether upgrading to a 9700k is going to be worth it. I may be able to upgrade my 1060 in the future, but I am looking to play with that for the time being. To be clear, I want to use the combination for mostly gaming. So, is it worth upgrading to a 9700k or 9900k so I don't have to worry about upgrading them in the foreseeable future? Or is the bottlenecking due to my GPU going to be horrific. If it will be bad, what do you suggest I do? Thanks

Do you only have a 1080p 60hz display?

What's your budget/country for upgrades?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

I have a 180hz Asus ROG PG248Q.

I live in the United State, looking to spend 500-600 max. I also need to get a new motherboard but I am okay with going a little over for that. There is about a $100 difference between the 9700k and 9900k. The 8700k is only $20 less than the 9700k.

I'm really just looking for the most performance while saving myself from having to upgrade my CPU again in the near future.

An R5 3600 will do just fine

Can buy a Neptwin or Scythe Fuma 2 CPU cooler later

I've never really been a fan of AMD, plus, I feel that I will have to upgrade that CPU relatively close down the line. Do you think the 9700k is better than the 8700k? 8 cores and 8 threads vs 6 cores and 12 threads. I'm really just debating between those two. And a side question, am I going to notice a big boost in fps going from i5 4460 to either one of them given I have a 1060 6gb? Thanks

Your current CPU is fine for 60hz gaming, the others are more for 144hz+ gaming

Really doesn't make any sense IMO to pay more for intel, it no longer has a major advantage in gaming going by this average fps chart, despite getting you stuck with a 6 core or 8 core with no hyperthreading for anything besides gaming

Can also just use a $100 MSI B450 Board for Ryzen 5, as it has USB bios flashing to update the bios without a CPU installed

Better go with the Ryzen 5 3600 CPU. Anyhow you will need a new motherboard while picking INTEL and AMD. Plus the 10th generation wont support your LGA 1151 meaning you will not be able to upgrade to 10th Gen CPU. Whereas AMD have been providing backward compatibility. So my choice is you get an AMD CPU looking at the current market..

I’d get the best thing you could. Not what’s just “fine”. If you get another card and the cpu is still weak compared to it, you’ll be in the same boat again.

Hell I just put one of the i5 9400F systems together with an RTX 2060 and its a perfectly fine rig...  I built it on an MSI 360 itx board with 16 gigs of ram and it can handle most anything you want to do..  Don't waste a lot of extra cash on 9th gen i7 its largely going to be wasted overkill
