Upgrading CPU on same socket type?

If I have a 4670k, when I want to upgrade to a 4770k (as they both run on LGA 1150) is it as simple as taking out the 4670k and putting the 4770k in with it's heatsink? Do i need to do anything else or will it all run fine straight away?

I think it should just run fine

Setup: i5 4670k @ 4.2 Ghz, Corsair H100i Cooler, Corsair Vengeance Pro 16GB Ram @ 1600 Mhz, MSI Z87-GD65 Motherboard, Corsair GS700 2013 edition PSU, MSI GTX 770 Lightning, Samsung EVO 120 SSD + 2TB&1TB Seagate Barracudas, BenQ XL2411T Monitor, Sennheiser HD 598 Headphones + AntLion ModMic 4.0

check your mobo to make sure the bios supports it.

Yes. Look up your motherboard's CPU support list.

Some programs right need reactivation if you change the cpu, but other than that it's straightforward.

I'm on a very tight budget at the moment, so I will most likely first of all buy a 4670k, and then later down the road I will upgrade to a 4770k probably.

I think you will need to re install the os and programs but no other hardware changes would be needed,

You will not see a meaning full difference when upgrading to a 4770K, i could be wrong, but i am pretty sure i am not. Also you will probably need to re-install the OS, and reactivate/reinstall some if not all your current software

SSD 128GB Sandisk Ultra Plus as my OS drive. HDD's  1TB  Seagate ST31000524AS its OEM, 3TB Seagate Barracuda, 2x 500GB WDC Blue (RAID 0)

If it isn't working absolutely perfectly, according to all your assumptions, it is broken.

It seems an awful waste getting an i5-4670K only to replace it in a year or so with an i7-4770K. Have you considered other options. Perhaps going with an i5-4430 or a Xeon E3-1230 V3?

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Are you sure? Have you used it before with video editing?

That's true, although I wasn't sure on what I would get if I sold my cpu.

Its not worth spending the extra money even later on just to upgrade unless you have a money tree in your backyard.

i would just save more and just get the 4770k. There is no point in getting a 4670k with the intention of upgrading to a 4770k in the future. its just a waste of money imo.

Nope. Software/OS doesn't care about CPU, only mobo does. Mobo is the key in that change since while CPU is brains, mobo is the boss controllig 'em all. So only thing needed is to either clear CMOS before or load optimized setting on boot after new CPU. Some mobos will load them automaticly when they notice that CPU has been changed. I don't know if some software would need reactivation. None needed when I wnet from E8400 to Q6600.
