Choosing a CPU Upgrade

Hi all! I recently upgraded my GPU to a 2060 Super. I need to upgrade my CPU (Currently a Ryzen 5 1600) to something more capable of keeping up with the 2060. I already have an X470 motherboard, so any Ryzen series CPU should work fine. Right now I'm thinking about the Ryzen 7 3700X. Is that a good pairing with the 2060 Super, or should I go for something else?

what are you talking about? The R5 1600 keeps up fine with the 2060s unless you just want more out of your CPU that the 1600 isn't providing.

In Battlefield V, I'm getting OK frames at 1080p (roughly 100 on average on Ultra settings) but I get occasional stutters, and according to task manager, I'm using 100% of my CPU while only using 10% of my GPU power. Is task manager not a good indication of bottlenecking? My assumption was that I'm CPU limited in some way, because of the utilization disparity.

3700x would be great for 2060. Even a 3600 would be good.

The 3600 would be a decent pick for those purposes

task manager sucks, its buddy and not accurate

moving up into higher resolutions is based off the gpu not the cpu

 

a 3600 would be fine tho

2060 won't have enough juice for 1440p. It should manage 60fps though.

Even 1440p low settings? I'm not shooting for best quality, I'd just like to up the resolution a little and still get a few more frames. I'm not super familiar with the capabilities of the RTX lineup but I was told the 2060 Super was a good starting point for 1440p, if you're willing to turn down some graphics settings. The guy who told me that could very well be wrong though.

What GPU did you have before?

 

You may have just forgot to DDU in safe mode and reinstalled your nvidia drivers fresh new, if you're coming from older architectures than Turing performance might break indeed.

 

You don't need to upgrade your CPU just yet to likely fix your issues.

I'm coming from an RX 580 8gig. I did use DDU, but not in safe mode. Maybe I should try that first! That hadn't occurred to me.

1440p ultra would give you 60fps, on lowest setting you can get 120fps but it will not be stable.

2060 IS a starting point for 1440p which really meant for a comfortable 60fps, since it's replacing a 1080p - 60fps card, the 1060.

Make sure that you've the latest driver already downloaded, sometimes after you DDU'd in safe mode and reboot Windows Update will want to push it's DCH OEM drivers first so it's important to have internet disabled and only re-enable the internet after the right driver is installed.

This helped framerates quite a bit, in my initial testing. Thanks! I'll probably still be bugging this forum about future upgrades, but for now everything seems to be working the way I'd initially expected.

That's good info, thank you. In that case, I'll probably just have to wait for 2100 or 2200 series cards for 1440p high FPS. 

 

Sidenote- it IS a 2060 Super, will that be a little better at 1440p than the comfortable 60fps, or still about the same?

You should be able to get ~100 FPS at 1440p.

This isn't entirely accurate since the 2060S is more powerful than the GTX 1080. That being said achieving above120 FPS all the time is unlikely.
