Hey Guys,

I am new one gamer/enthusiast to the forum and I have been a tech for over 25 years. However, I am curious as I haven't built a PC in a while I been using a laptop or a Mac as of recent and my last build died finally. With that said I have new stuff going on in my life. For instance I am studying Forensics Technology. And I run about 8 VM's mostly for testing and my Mac is not handling them all to well besides most of my classes are done with Windows. So I decided it was time to do a nice build. I am wanting to stay within 999.00 Dollar range but still get a great performance PC when I game with LOL.

So My question is What is better for Virtualization and Would I benefit with 8 Cores instead of 4 Cores. Do I have to chose a non Overclock with intel versus a overclockable AMD?

Let me know and maybe post a build to give me examples it would be a big help.

Thanks,

Dade :D

Non-overclock with intel? Intel does have overclockable processors as well.  The i5-4670K is overclockable. I prefer Intel.

I would go with either a intel 477)K (overclockIng does show a marginal improvement) or go amd kaveri A10 7850K

this is a very wide statement, an apu over say a 8320/8350+gpu?

Intel would be advised, because it is used by enterprise companies specifically for running multiple virtual machine and stuff, it also has the technology to support advanced hardware sharing etc.  So Intel 100%  BUT if you were on a budget and didn't need anything else than just running a virtual machine bare and dry AMD might be an option.  But its not made for that.

this is hard to justify hardware because $1000 usd isnt really enough to build a high end computer which is what i feel your asking for

If you need virtualization & gaming i would say go for an Intel i5-4670k and you would be fine. But if you do heavy virtualization and video rendering as well then go for i7-4770k. Plus getting a k series unlocked processor won't hurt if you do wish to overclock you cpu in future. With that said you also need a better cpu cooler like a 240mm AIO and a good motherboard Z87 chipset i would say gigabyte g1 sniper z87 or asus maximus vi hero or msi z87 gd-65 gaming.

Four cores is always necessary now for gaming though using a dual core you could get away with it. I was going to buy and build a desktop machine based on the amd a10 7850k + Asus A88XM-A Socket FM2+ which is pretty beast for a 50 quid motherboard but i cut that plan as i wanted a new system straight away due to my laptop keyboard fking itself over and over again ,...was originally planning on getting and being one of the first people to switch from a laptop to a haswell_E eight core maCHinE IN q3 this year

Yes EpicGeekonFIre The build is because I do a lot of my test from school on different vms and different types of systems. I do testing on Linux environments, windows, and Unix so I need something that is willing to handle the workload and at the same time offer over-clockable as well. Everything I read about the i74770k says it can do virtualization but someone brought up that the K's do not allow for throughput for virtualization. So that is why I decided to see what others would say. And trying to stay within budget so that I am not breaking the bank.

By virtualization do you mean using virtual box and VMware? If so, go with Intel. Less of a hassle.

I will be running VMWare and maybe VB but I was looking into buying parallels as I know I can use it with Mac and actually like it much better then VMware. But The school wants us to use VMWare. I also do testing at my job so I run Two VM's for 2 databases. So of course I have too many test VM's and mostly Virtual Server connect to a Client so I can test the software from one side to the other.

Wow so many intel fan's! :D

AMD is a perfectly acceptable choice for running virtual machines. I have an 8350 with 32GB of RAM running VMWare workstation and I've had Virtualbox running in the past.

Everything works flawlessly. If you want to go AMD don't let it stop you.

I have built Intel platforms and know that many AMD runs Hot. But I also know the benefit of AMD. I lived with an AMD fan boy. However I just want the best system for the money. There is many pros and cons on both systems . But I am looking to keep it in budget and something to last a few years. AMD gets a lot of forum talk with VMware. BUT I have always been an Intel fan myself because of my first over clock build. So I am not a huge fan of running hotter I still howerver do want to stay in budget. You guys have been very awesome in giving me help. I appreciate this very much.

For your budget, I'd go with an 83XX and the best GPU you can afford after the other parts are chosen.

Oneplus 6 | Sony 55" X900F . Lenovo Y540 17" 144Hz RTX 2060 . i7 9750h.

Audio-GD DAC-19MK3 > Schiit Lyr 2 + > FOSTEX TH900 . Sony XBA-Z5

no problem man,

could easily switchout gpu/cpu and motherboard, even ram, but it gives you a building block for something awesome

I think the AMD 8320 offers a lot of power (especially with an overclock) at a good price, and the motherboards are priced well too. just remember that it's a dead platform, so your next computer would be a full rebuild of the core.

I've never dabbled with VM, but I've been under the impression it's a strength for AMD

I'd go with a 8320 unless you need Intel-only features.
