Are screen protectors actually helping? Or is the gorilla glass 6 more than overkill?

Depends entirely on how careful you are with your phones. It's not like we can know how careful or careless you are.

How do people do that? My phone's screen is still covered by the same, flimsy protector it shipped with three years ago and it's still almost pristine, let alone the rest of the phone.

well it was used in china for a while, if you don't know how that works, imagine being in a metro without space on the pole to put your hand

 

also the one i got was shitty and was just a little flexible to begin with

film is crap and does nothing but ruin the screen feel. a tempered glass one does protect a lot. ive shattered multiple glass protectors, and some of those times if i didnt have a protector, it would have been my 1500$ screen that was broken.

Tempered glass screen protectors really are screen protectors. Especially for hits, falls or similar damage.

Use a film protector, not a tempered glass one. I know there are some that have already spoke ill of them but I have anecdotal evidence that they are superior. So, short answer to you OP is yes, you should definitely protect your screen further than what Gorilla Glass is already doing.

 

A regular tempered glass screen protector will crack when it absorbs the impact of a fall. Even if the crack is small at first, it'll spiderweb into more as time goes on. Tempered glass is tough but at the end of the day, it's still glass and can and will shatter. That's why most TG protectors come in packs of like three and five or more, because you'll be going through them quite often if you drop you phone. They will protect your device, no doubt about it, but how many are you gonna go through and how many small cracks are you willing to put up with?

 

A film protector on the other hand, will absorb the impact from a drop and transfer the residual energy to the Gorilla Glass already on your phone. Small nicks and cuts, depending on your brand, will actually heal themselves over time. They don't shatter or crack and are very resistant to fingerprints, scratches and oil residue. In my mind it's like a bullet proof vest; instead of solid metal it uses a mesh of Kevlar to 'catch' a bullet and absorb that impact. You'll still feel it, speaking from experience, but the energy is less. The concept is the same here. I think they feel just fine to my fingers, though they are harder to put on.

 

So yeah, I'd say try those and see if you like them. My favorite brand is from Armor Suit, easiest to put on and they'll give you a new one if you fuck up the install.

IMHO, screen protectors do a lot of work. Without one, you'll accumulate 1000 micro-scratches on your screen in a matter of months. Everyone I know who doesn't use a case and a screen protector has a cracked screen. Gorilla glass is so overrated.
