Hey guys, I’ll be soon switching from my totally broke iPhone X, front and rear glass unfortunately broken, and I dont want to spend 300-400 bucks on a reparation. What I want the most in a smartphone is that it doesn’t get too slow after 1 year and the camera must be good, not focusing too much on that since i have a DSLR but it’s still important for me.
So the Pixel 3a came in my mind and i was wondering if it was still a viable option right now, I’ll probably wait for the Pixel 4 launch before getting the pixel 3a if i decide to, but I’m scared that the pixel 3a will get laggy out of the box because stock android isn’t very optimised even on their flagship like the pixel 3.

Thanks for you answer

wrong, issues with stock android and fast updates are bugs, most pixel users are happy with their phones. who said that? don't think i heard anyone complaining about speed on a pixel device.

Disclaimer: The following statement is not intended to cause offense but is many genuine questions.

How do people feel most mid to high tier android phones getting slow over time? After I pass $250CAN I literally can't tell the difference any more other than the ability to play games. Is it because I understand the concept of closing apps? Do people enjoy wasting money on overpriced smart phones? Is buying a phone outright with no plan more rare than I realize? Is my phone the LG xPower3 a secret power house?

If the Pixel 3a is not viable, than my phone must be a literal brick.

Actually to answer to all of you I’ve just watched the reviews on YouTube. Linus, MKBHD, Dave2D and others have pointed out that the pixel phones get slow over time, I’m just listening and trusting what they say.

That is pretty hokey; if you are feeling the slowdown maybe it is time to upgrade. I would try a factory reset first and see if that helps.

Reset them every year and after every major update, every phone slowdown overtime. Also on android phones you can disable or speed up the animation, i set mine to .5.

I can

- Camera- i take a lot of pictures of my family and friends, low end phones suck at this.

- Display- Flagships have much better display- I can tell the difference between 1440p and 1080p

- Updates- Flagships gets more updates

- Features-

Features DEX and linux is really cool and fun to use in places like hotel.

- water resistance

- wireless charging

Is it because I understand the concept of closing apps?

Nope, because people have different standards. Some of us like convenients i can have youtube streaming while taking a 4k video, you might not. Ram is a useful think believe it or not.

Do people enjoy wasting money on overpriced smart phones?

Such a subjective word, its called having expendable income. GTX 2080ti is a overpriced part same with 144hz monitor, gaming mouse, mech keyboard but end of the day 144hz monitor with a 600 or 400 dpi mouse powered by a 1080ti will give you an advantage in games such as apex, for phones a expensive phone will have features your cheap phone won't.

Is buying a phone outright with no plan more rare than I realize?

Yup, i personally buy my phone outright but with certain plans, a 1000$ phone become affordable when you have to pay 30 or 40$ a month.

Is my phone the LG xPower3 a secret power house?

Nope, its a lowend device that works for your need, like a hd 4000 computer, it won't get you into CSGO esports but it will get the job done, just because someone buys a 250$ best buy pc and like it that doesn't mean highend computers are useless.

I would personally go for an older flagship than a low end phone.

I watched all these reviews and they weren't referring to Pixel devices in particular. This applies to all devices.

For example 64GB of internal storage that cannot be expanded.

Removing the SD card slot on a budget friendly device doesn't make any sense at all. At some point you need to figure out what type of users you are targeting

The battery is also not even 3000mAh, paltry. A user might brush it off saying it lasts him/her a whole day. But that does not mean that you will last the whole day on a single cup of water. Do all people use their phone with the same frequency and intensity? Think about it.

Battery capacity is just a number. When you look at actual battery tests of the phone you can see that it has a very decent battery life, quite on par of better than most devices in this price range.

A lot of people are recommending the galaxy S10 but I don’t really like Samsung’s phones in general, I found them slow and buggy and the cameras are meh

I already used a Samsung phone and it wasn’t incredible for me

I still think it’s an awesome phone but I don’t like the software that much on galaxy phones

Did you consider Oneplus? They have much better specs for the money and while the camera wont be as good as a pixel its still pretty good and you said you have a DSLR anyway. They released the 7T earlier this week for around $600 and the pro model is around $100-150 more. Might be worth looking into if you want stock android with better hardware than what google offers

Ok show me a standardized battery test for the Pixel 3a.

Not the XL. That thing has a 3700mAh battery instead.

From what I can see it's quite similar to the OP6/6T, but still trailing behind many phones like the A50 or the Pocofone. It's still pretty decent considering the fact that it has fast charge and stuff.

Pixel 3a owner here. I think it's very viable. It's snappy and does what I need it to do without too much fuss. Battery life is fine, as others have pointed out however it'll depend on your daily life. I wrote a sort of in depth review of the device if you get bored. May be helpful. It's not the best phone in that price point, but it's good enough for my uses. YMMV.

To be honest, having a phone zip through web pages faster than my Haswell desktop has quite a lot of appeal. I use the browser for my personal and work email, which chugs a bit on my own phone. IPhones absolutely shine here though, as even the heaviest of pages, loaded with ads from hell itself, gets roflstomped. Though with an iPhone, I lose flexibility, which makes the decision quite difficult when it comes time for me to get a new device.

Though something I found amusing, my current phone (Snapdragon 821) is a good bit faster than the Skylake desktops at work when running WebGL applications. Didn't think the HD 530 would be overrun by mobile GPUs that quickly. I'd have figured at minimum, the cpu in the phone would bottleneck.

My eyes see the past…

My camera lens sees the present…

  • 2 weeks later...

I can see that the Pixel 3a is currently available for $350 in many places including Amazon and B&H and tbf I think that's what the regular price should have been. I don't know if it's a price adjustment from Google or if it's because of the many alternatives like the Mi 9T Pro or just today's Pixel event
