Dark Rock Pro 4 - Clearance

James300
Go to solution Solved by Jurrunio,

it's fine, no clearance issue.

I've been more than happy with the performance of my Ryzen 3700X build of late, but the only thing that's irked me is the noise coming from the Wraith Prism cooler

I've been looking at alternatives, and debating between going down the AIO route or getting a high end air cooler. Figuring there's no point messing around, I'm looking at getting a Dark Rock Pro 4, and looking at pictures, it's a pretty thicc boi. I've got a full size ATX case (A Cooler Master MB511), am I likely to encounter any clearance issues with the case or other components? It appears to overhang the RAM slots in some images, but I doubt that'll be an issue with my Ripjaws V kit

Thanks!

Perfect thanks!

I suspected it should be fine, but after the hassle of dealing with AMD's RMA policy I'd like to make sure before I jump. Fingers crossed for a nice drop in temps and a lot less noise

The Dark Rock Pro 4(250w) does have clearance issues.

If your case was 8" wide or less the second fan will not fit. Since it is 8.54" it should fit.

For ram slots, some RGB ram is too tall for it. For example Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro ram will not fit.

My Dark Rock Pro is sitting in its box because it would not fit over the RGB ram. Fortunately I had a Noctua NH-D15 lying around and it did fit over the ram but the second fan that sits over the ram was too tall for the case.

Thankfully I've not got any RGB RAM, so there should hopefully be no issues there.

I'll probably pay a little more to buy from somewhere with a no-questions return policy

The case width alone isn't what determines how much clearance is available. Depending on panel shape / thickness and the placement of the motherboard tray, there may be more or less clearance available.

It is a good indicator.

I personally like cases around 9" wide since I know that the second fan that sits over the ram on the Dark Rock Pro 4(250w) and a Noctua NH-D15 will fit.

The case that give me problems was a SilverStone Technology RL06BR-GP. The build quality of the case is fantastic but at only 7.87" wide it is a tight fit for a large tower cooler.

The large cooler was needed since the CPU was a i9 9900k with an all core 5ghz overclock.  Even though only one fan on the D15 could fit the i9 9900k ran totally cool. What started out as a bit of a fitment disaster turned out to be a very successful build.

Thanks for prodding me to google a bit more into the case dimensions. CoolerMaster claims that the case will accept coolers up to 165mm, with the DRP4 coming in at 162.8, so it'll be a bit cozy but should be fine

It is not the cooler height but how high the second fan sits over the ram.

Here is an images of a Noctua NH-D15 second fan sitting on top of a G-skill Ripjaws V. The second fan is touching the ram and is 1/2" above the cooler.

This is in a 9" Cooler Master case so no issues.

Same thing -- can't have one without the other.
