HEIC Images

SenKa

Is there any plans for HEIC formatted images to display properly, like JPEG's? I honestly didn't even notice this as an issue until recently, so fair enough if the answer is no.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

See https://caniuse.com/#feat=heif

Browsers don't support it natively, you'd need to install a plugin / extension in the browser to see them.

Otherwise, the forum backend would need to convert the image to JPG or PNG before showing it to you. So you might as well convert the image to JPG or PNG before uploading.

As stated above, HEIC has to be supported in browsers before it can be supported on a forum for it to be useful, really.

I guess that answers my question! I actually didn't know it was not yet supported, so for now I will just convert them to JPEG.

Yeah. There is some benefit to HEIC, like maybe 10-20% better quality in the same file size but the downside is that it's patented and any software in theory has to pay some licensing fee for each copy sold or downloaded.

Apple can afford to pay a one time fee for the licenses, something like a few million dollars, and they're also part of the patent pool so basically it's like they're paying themselves.

Also, they're not really doing it for your benefit... for them it was super easy because their main chip has hardware encoders and decoders built in (it's used to encode videos shot with the camera, and play HEVC videos) so from a power consumption point of view, it may actually consume less power to save to HEIC on iPhones ... and HEIC image files are basically a HEVC encoded video that has only one frame (1/60 th of a second), with further limitations.

They're working on a future image format that uses the AV1 codec which is still in development, and will be better than HEVC and VP9 but right now extremely slow.
