Need SSD storage for game, nothing very good - just better than HDD

A few years back I got a 500GB SSD which is now rather full (there modern games and MMOs are huge). At the time this drive was $170.

For this price I can probably get 2TB now

 

So my question is - are there less speedy SSDs with 1TB to 2TB  that could be found used for less than the full price?

Not planning to do production work, just want a dedicated drive for games larger than my current one.

I know you can get 1TB M.2 drives for just over $100 now so you can probably find a good brand SATA SSD in that price range. Just have to look around.

I have a Crucial MX500 M.2 form factor Sata SSD. I got it on sale for less than the 2.5 inch form factor. Good drive in my eyes. Has a black sticker on most of it so it kinda blends in to my MOBO. No need for the bump in price of NVME for this kind of drive in my opinion. Plus M.2 is amazing because no wires! Looking for used might be an issue, but brand new I got mine for like 95-97 USD if memory serves. New they are sub 110 USD.

Should be noted that there's no more room for m.2, as its only 1 slot.

So SATA is mandatory.

Getting something "good" is pointless, 80$-90$ for a TB is basically a decent 660p of 1TB - that's a deal, but it's not "decent" it actually "good". I'm not going to overspend on this crap, cause it's not that important.

 

Are there really no bare-bones SATA SSDs out there that people say is just too slow for an SSD?!

I'd avoid any SSD with Planar NAND, such as WD greens, and DRAM-less ones tend to be a bit slower.

but basically any drive is fine.

anything should do just stay away from anything lower than tlc and dont fill them to the top personally i dont go over halfway.

Still following the market. But SSDs don't appear to be as commonplace yet. No used or refurbished SSDs going for really really nice prices. Prices are just too close to the New SSDs.

not commonplace? My house hold has 3 desktops and 9 laptops in total and all have atleast 1 ssd. I haven't seen a computer without a ssd in probably over a year.

I dont recommend second hand ssd's anyway. There is no way for consumers to measure tbw so they dont lose value as you can always sell them as new no way of checking their use.

I would say SSDs are commonplace lol. Just not low buck. You will find an SSD maybe even an NVME SSD in just about every laptop, if not every laptop, above 700 USD. 
 

Heck in my pc build, I have nothing but M.2 SSDs. Way less wires and price is stupid cheap for the convenience. Not to mention more reliable than an HDD.

Don't know this yet  Give it a couple of years.

 

Btw: Commonplace - meaning not something only an enthusiast would buy. Joe Blow doesn't know an SSD from a flash drive or a microSD card. Most regular folk get an SSD as part of a work computer, prebuilt or a laptop they bought.

The more reliable part I was referencing is the idea of shaking a HDD vs an ssd and the damage there can be associated with it. 
 

I wouldn’t necessarily call myself an enthusiast. I built my first pc this past summer because I was tired of tossing money down the trash can on terrible prebuilts. Would you say someone who changes their own oil is an enthusiast? I don’t mean they last question as a poke back, but an honest one lol

Unfortunately it's more commonplace than you think. 

Dealerships service station and independent repair shops are certainly still here. Someone buying a current (2000ish) car would find some issues harder to solve, often leading to apathy about the whole affair and leaving it in the "hands of a professional".
