Random 100% CPU usage on Laptop

My CPU usage randomly goes to 100 while using my laptop for light tasks such as browsing the internet and writing documents. When it happens my laptop starts to run as if it is in slow motion. The screen stutters and lags while keyboard and mouse input takes a while to register.

Laptop Specs :

Core i7 7500U

16GB Ram

2 TB HDD

Why would not having an ssd cause his cpu to be at 100% usage o.0

because windows 10 is shit.
It will defrag drives, re-"index" things, look/verify or even downloads updates, send telemetry if not disbaled and do similar useless garbage in the background if it thinks the user is not "doing anything".

A maxed CPU will give you a stuttery mouse. A maxed out C; drive will freeze your system. Both in combination, will cause OP's problem, if he actually runs win10 that is.

Keep in mind we are looking at a system here that has a dual core (yes that I7 is a dual core with HT) 2,8ghz~ CPU and a HDD which will most likely be able to do around 80mb/s tops.

@Nord or quote me if you want me to reply back. I don't necessarily check back or subscribe to every topic.

Amdahls law > multicore CPU.

Its possible it could be the hard drive, but on my laptop it was 100% disk usage literally all the time even with no programs running, the cpu would spike sometimes as well. I did install an SSD on it and with a fresh Windows 10 install, and the problem is no longer there. Its worth a shot, ssd's are cheap these days

Very good point. Time for a new computer or a decent second hand one with more modern equipment like an ssd and four cores or above
