If I got a good USB 3.0 hub(say 10 port) and plugged it in to a router, then got 10 USB 3.0 to sata adapters, connected to 10 internal ssd's, would I basically have a NAS? Would it be able to use raid(10)?

This question is more out of curiosity I would likely build an actual NAS if I needed this type of storage, but if you have any ideas let me know.

At me or quote me, I want to hear your opinion.

Hopefully anything I say is factually correct. Sorry for any mistakes in advanced.

I'm about 95% sure that wouldn't work.

build a NAS out of an old computer. It ain't hard. if you can assemble a computer and install windows, you can build a freenas appliance.

This would most definitely not work. Those ports are really only meant to recognize one drive at a time, let-alone support software RAID, over USB at that.

You can build a very capable NAS for cheap using an old computer & something like FreeNAS.

While I do appreciate the thought out answers, I am not actually looking to deploy such a system. I am merely curious if such an option is even relevant. If I needed a NAS I would certainly build one.

Well technically, if it let you access one of the drives, yes you would have a Nas. Would it let you do a raid setup? No. You either need a hardware raid card that plugs in via USB (doesn't exist) or you would need to run software raid on the router. (as far as I know, doesn't exist)

Most routers run a sort of stripped Linux version. So in theory. Yes, it should work. The real question should be. How safe will be router be after?

I would say while there is a high chance this is possible it's an horrible idea.
