USB may have issues with motherboard, but those are really rare. Software doesn't cause that kind of problems to hardware.

Take customer reviews with grain of salt. They will give product bad review if store messes something. Or shipping.

I assume the OP meant Sandisk USB drives.  It's the only brand that I've used over the past five years and never had a single failure or problem.  I've done Win7, 8.1, and 10 installs using them.

Workstation PC Specs: CPU - i7 8700K; MoBo - ASUS TUF Z390; RAM - 32GB Crucial; GPU - Gigabyte RTX 1660 Super; PSU - SeaSonic Focus GX 650; Storage - 500GB Samsung EVO, 3x2TB WD HDD;  Case - Fractal Designs R6; OS - Win10

You format from OS or by using 3rd party software. If you are on Win10, right click over connected drive and choose "Format...". Formatting brand new drive is just good practice. Sometimes manufacturers leave diagnostic tools or something like that in there. Besides mounting OS image would do that also, if partition on drive isn't empty.
