AMD’s Mantle benchmarked

"AMD’s Mantle benchmarked: The biggest innovation in gaming since DirectX 9"

AMD’s Mantle is the first new consumer graphics API to launch in over a decade and its potential impact on the gaming and CPU markets is enormous. Last week, we covered AMD’s performance claims for Mantle – today, we’re diving in with our own test results. We’ve benchmarked Mantle on a range of graphics cards and CPUs, from Kabini at the low-end to the Intel Core i7-4770K...

Nice review, now we wait till games like BF4 will actually run anything with a hint of stability (and AMD releases optimised drivers for HD 7000 series etc).

I have no doubt that Mantle would be very impressive in a game like StarSwarm, but the fact that an i7-3930k with a GTX 770 can't crack 10 fps seems kind of unusual to me.

It really comes down to your pc configuration, and currently what GPU you are using (most GCN gpu's aren't optimised for mantle yet, as you see on the last page the 260x and 270x have barely a 1fps improvement with mantle currently).

there's probably a good explanation for that...

Can you possibly imagine Nvidia to make their own low level api? No. But they could adopt mantle.

I am really looking forward what will happen with GPU prices. Selling low end cards for 200 bucks and all...800 for high end... miners...nvidia prices...rebadges...TSMC 28nm...

Agreed.  Seems odd, driver related perhaps?

Benchmarks are all fine and dandy to show, but what really matters is how it performs on your system.

Star Swarm benchmark is already working well already on my to-be-overclocked Intel® Core i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz, with R9 280x (Asus Direct CU-II).   Benchmarked at Ultra 1080p "Follow Scenario"

Just waiting to upgrade my OCZ 600W psu before I dare start pushing my system again.

with star swarm it is the number of draw calls that wreck the fps, kinda nitrous's way of pointing out the flaw in D3D, and I found looking at others benchmarks gpu doesn't matter much.

I suppose, but the CPU they used isn't particularly weak either. I know this is a stress test on an unfinished game, but I'm hoping/assuming this is just some sort of marketing thing where they're trying to extole the virtues of Mantle rather than be truly indicative of the final experience. If two-thirds of their potential market is going to have such a drastically weaker experience, that could seriously affect their sales (I'm assuming two-thirds because AMD has <40% market share, and even then not all AMD users will have cards at 7000 series and above).

well that is the thing sure it is a powerful cpu, but it is sitting around doing nothing besides waiting for D3D for some work, so it's not the CPU's issue just D3D

We don't really need Mantle, we need devs to actually properly code DX11.

Did any one else notice how the A10-7950k APU ONLY hit 30+ FPS in BF4 on ultra at 1920x1080, that is amazing and mantle gave it 9% improvement.

The 280x benchmark  is false.THERE IS 0 INCREASE OF FRAME RATE ON MY 7970 IN BF4!!!!

Did you install the 14.1 driver, then switch it from Direct X to Mantle in the graphics settings?

Just checking because I have a big improvement using 280x
