What wattage should I go with?

My system that I am upgrading with end up being about a 400 watt tdp. I have a 500 watt psu. Is it worth upgrading the psu or should I just leave it as is? Any responses are appreciated. Thanks.

500w is normally fine.  How do you know it's 400w tdp?

TDP is a thermal measurement, not a power usage measurement.

The only way to tell you if the PSU is still a good fit, is to know your current PSU (exact make a model) and also knowing your exact system.

You won't hurt anything by seeing if you can load it to a point where it shuts off.

Your rig would run on a 450 watt PSU, you could go for a much nicer 550 watt if you like, such as a Bitfenix Formula Gold 550.

The EVGA 500B is consistently in the lower tiers of the PSU tier lists, not the sort of PSU I would trust with an high end system such as the one linked.

The wattage is good for the system, just the sort of unit is not the sort of quality you should be looking for.

 

A Corsair TXM unit (like a TX550M or TX650M) will do much better.

His build is a hot mess.  Bad CPU choice, terrible cooler choice, WD Black HDD's, bad PSU.

 

Probably can fit a 3600 in there if you redo it all with stock cooler and regular people HDD's.

Look regarding your psu no you don't need a better one unless you want one or want to save money. Your PC is a hot mess your cpu especially with that gpu.

For 160$, the 1700X is far from bad. Keep in mind it's the same price as a 3400G and you get double the cores.

In the entire context of the build it is. It is a good CPU by itself but changing buckets you can get a current gen CPU that is much better for slightly more.  An expensive water cooled 1700X is just a bad call.

 

3400G has Vega, so can't compare them directly but I know what you're getting at.

Don't get me wrong, I agree. A 40$ cooler and the rest can go towards a 2070S or 5700 XT. Or maybe an SSD that doesn't scream "China numbah wan"

I'd personally get Reds. I've had extremely good experiences with them. One even survived a drop while in operation (don't ask, we are idiots)
