build plan for friend

mxk

Hilo, my friend is looking to build a gaming pc (and maybe some editing) for around 1k USD. He's playing r6s and csgo at 1080p 60hz. At the moment he doesn't need a monitor, mouse, or keyboard. just a PC. I haven't been keeping up since before zen 2 got released so I'm kind of in the dark on what to completely do. Thats why I'm hoping to get some help finishing this list. He said 1k for the budget but I'm trying to keep the price low since we're all still high schoolers and he doesn't have a job. This is the unfinished list right here for now, any advice for this PC is really appreciated!

You could go with a b450 motherboard to save some cash if needed.

Msi b450 max for example.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

Ask your friend a question is he want more future proof pc or he just want pc that will be good for ~1 year? if he says more future proof, first job is to throw away that 6GB gpu and install 8GB RTX2070 super or 2080

You could easily get away with only an RX 570/580/590 for those games, and use the money to upgrade the display to a 1080p 240hz display, which is going to be really nice for fps games

also make sure the SSD has a cache for long term use, and probably get at least 500Gbs.

motherboard's VRMs suck for the price and there's much faster nvme drives for less. an RX 570 can't even run R6S at 144hz, much less run it at 240hz. Not to mention there's barely any change from 144hz to 240hz.

There's a pretty significant change IMO, but only in fast moving games like fps games.

The GPU is able to do 150-200(at low settings) depending on the scene in question, but he can always upgrade his GPU sometime next year, when current high end GPU prices are down.

Dunno where Ryzen caps out in that game, but it's easily worth the investment for the better monitor if all he plays is first person shooters. CS:GO is a cake walk in any event.

There's really no other great motherboard options for the money unless he can upgrade the bios of an X470 board, the MSI B450 boards with USB flashing are all up in price. Need B550 boards already.

Hey, I noticed you suggesting EVGA 500 GD. On what basis?

In case you didn't notice, the unit you chose isn't one of the known 450GD, 550GD, or 650GD series, released in 2017.

What you have there is a new series of three PSUs released around April this year; 500GD, 600GD and 700GD. They have no reviews, I don't know who makes them and I don't know what internals they have, but I do know they do not use neither the lower-end Raider II platform, nor the higher-end Raider II platform that older GDs used.

this one has no reviews yet? i just thought they were more or less the same. guess i'll stick to other units for now then.

You took the photo from this thread, right? http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?14041-EVGA-450GD-550GD-650GD

You realize that... I was the one who made that thread? Kinda ironic.

And no, I don't mean the old 450/550/650GD. I thought my post is as clear as it can possibly be, really. I don't know how you can interpret my mention of 500/600/700GD as meaning the 450/550/650GD.

I specifically explained to @Herman Mcpootis that 500GD, 600GD and 700GD are not the same thing as 450GD, 550GD and 650GD.

450GD, 550GD and 650GD were launched in 2017 and use the ACRF version of Raider II, just like I discovered and described in Jonnyguru thread.

While 500GD, 600GD and 700GD were launched this year, and they do not use that platform.

They do not use the double-forward version of Raider II either.

They may not even use FSP, unfortunately I don't know who manufactures them. There are no reviews and no inside photos.

I don't know where's the confusion coming from, since I though I was perfectly clear. x50 GD ones use the platform in photo above, x00 GD ones are new and unknown. I feel like I'm repeating myself.

If I sound irritated, I'm sorry.

I get the whole future proofing thing, but we don't know what is coming in the future.

You guys are fucking nuts lmao "throw away that 6gb and install 8gb 2070 super or 2080

hes literally sticking to 60hz csgo and r6s at the moment, not 1440p.

I'm not trying to be rude, but I just don't think it's practical to go with a top tier card for siege and a game that can run on a fucking potato in 800x600 stretched (csgo)

You don't need a 1k usd budget, drop an entire tier of hardware that you're looking at. Ryzen 3 3200g and an RX 570 or 580. Nvidia 1660 or 1660ti. That will be more than enough for a pretty long time and will cost drastically less. Invest into that nice x570 board and maybe a 650w version of that psu now to make a larger future upgrade to a 3700/3900 and better gpu much easier.

Yeah I dunno. He gave me the budget and thats what I'm aiming for but i have a feeling 1k won't be the final budget.

There's a low chance he'll upgrade to a better zen 2 chip, so I think 550w will be good but I appreciate the thoughts for that. If he ever did upgrade CPUs, he doesnt overclock anything. He told me he'd still play at shit settings even with a good PC so... yeah

I was thinking that the monitor doesn't really matter right now, but I was thinking the same thing. I asked and he said that he doesn't care for a higher end monitor, since his dad can probably get a free monitor. I didn't like the sound of free monitor, since it might be bad, but I can't be sure for now.

He doesn't really know what he's missing with 144/240hz but its whatever I guess. If he wants to get one later on he can.
