Split bandwidth between 2 routers?

ISP's can legally track most anything,  and when your neighbor downloads a torrent... YOU will be liable, as it's your account.

Just pay for internet, it's not like it's expensive.

You know what? You are right. I don't want to be held accountable for anything.

So I am considering spiting gigabit internet with my neighbors, and I thought about how on one LTT video, their router could limit speeds per devices like for example they set Phillips hue to 1mbps and the gaming PC to no limit I think. My plan is like to have 10 routers (random number) and allow each to have 100mbps up and down. I'm just trying to decide what should be the main router I connect them all to that controls the speeds.

Thanks in advance.

Read the fine print on your ISP's contract.  Supplying internet to the neighbors could violate the terms of service and they can turn you off.

Ok thanks for the advice, I will make sure to read everything.

Why do you want 2 routers? Id just get one router and make 2 subnets that can't talk to each other and then you can limit the speed of both and go qos.

ALso with gigabit, you don't really need to limit bandwidth, its hard to fill for most uses, and you can easily download a game + stream a few videos at once.

Except the obvious - how would they ever know?

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

they can normally do this. Depends on your exact country and contract, they are often allowed to monitor and change network traffic.

I would be way more concerned with having to be the tech support for this nightmare waiting to happen. 10 residences? If for a second you think it's gonna be smooth and never hiccup causing someone to call you at 3am, think again. And they will eventually find out because someone you are reselling service to will dime you out when they don't get what they think they should be. Seen it happen many times with people that have tried it. I get the "entrepreneurial" nature of it and why not make some money but it's only fun until it's not and then what? You just cancel everyone's service? Not a great idea. And good luck getting paid consistently by everyone. They say no and you have no recourse but to shut off their service and then they dime you out. Exactly how it happens. And you are out the cost of infrastructure.

Proof? We ALL KNOW they do. It's everywhere! Hence the reason why VPN's are a thing. So you have proof... but you also have no internet then too. Just don't do it.

I used 10 as an example because it is easy to do math with the number 10. I will probably only share with 1 or 2 people.

Also, if you were planning on splitting the price, the ISP can consider that reselling their product which is illegal.  You'll say splitting, they'll say reselling... and you'll be in court asking the judge to decide in your favor.

Or if you wanted to just be nice to your neighbor and let them mooch for free... do it on the down-low.  Don't set up equipment, make additional subnets, none of that.  If anything ever happens, those will be looked at as proof of intentional sharing.

Best case, say your neighbor accidentally gets your password and leave it at that.

You could just get a 16 port 100 mbps ethernet switch and then have ethernet cable to each neighbor.

Your ISP will have some clauses about your internet plan being for your use only and so on, and if they really want to they can figure out by looking at the average traffic, what websites you're accessing .. for ex. if there's 5 youtube videos being played at same time lots of time, it's unlikely it's just one family using the internet subscription.

There's some downsides.... you'd be legally liable if your neighbors do something bad... for ex. if a neighbor uses stolen credit cards or torrents something and gets caught, you'll get the blame.

You can check out and see if the ISP offers some kind of business accounts, which may be more expensive but they won't clauses preventing you from giving neighbors internet.

However the ISP will probably not give one of these accounts unless you're actually a business.

They do spy on you. How do you think Comcast throttled Bit Torrent traffic or Netflix traffic? They do packet sniffing. They know what data is going across the network. The only way to block that is to use a VPN. Also ISP's keep track of usage as well. Every ISP I have ever come across has a network usage policy. Basically stating that customers who consume too much data could be kicked off the service, even if they have unlimited data. Ive heard both Comcast and Verizon have about a 10 TB cap before your getting the What the FUCK call from them. In the case of Comcast, you have to pay extra for "Unlimited". Another way they spy on you is thru DNS servers, which is why I dont use my ISP's DNS servers. ISP's also have back doors in to equipment that you rent from them. Read a post a while back where a Comcast employee stated that they can see what devices are connected to their Gateways. Which is why I own my own modem and router.

Also you do understand that much of this traffic is piped in to the NSA right? Like AT&T got caught with NSA equipment in their data center. So any way you look at it, your being spied on. So get used to it.

Comcast will. They dont give two fucks. Many people used and probably still use Business Accounts to have "Unlimited data" . Also business accounts have the ability to have static IP's and other things. The only thing is your paying more money for slower service most of the time. You think they stick it to their residential customers, no they really stick it in without lube their small business customers.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Well... but here's the uglier side to that coin... and I KNOW you can find lots of cases of it online... is that the account that bandwidth is coming from is you. Whomever you are sharing it with (even though think they are top shelf and all that) decides to be searching for kiddy porn. Maybe not even getting, but searching. Your IP is tagged and the Feds come in and raid your house. "They won't find proof of anything, so what?" So your house gets tossed and damaged. Your name gets smeared all over the federal lists as a "potential" child molester and you spend a few weeks in jail while they forensically dig through your computer gear. You lost your job and even though you weren't guilty, a flag comes up on your record that you can't escape. Your skeevy neighbor/friend/customer gets off scott free. Happens man. Just sayin... You really don't want that kind of liability. People do weird shit for strange reasons even when they seem to be perfectly decent human beings. Smart people do dumb shit. Don't involve yourself. That's a tag you can't ever shake...even if you did nothing wrong.
