Terrible battery performance on a gaming laptop...

I know that title sounds stupid but I couldn't think of a better title.

Okay, so it's like this: I bought a used ASUS ROG GU501GM laptop because it seemed better than my existing Strix GL502VM in virtually every facet and it was a good price, despite being slightly damaged (though not in any way that should affect performance, from what I can tell).

However I've been having a number of weird quirky issues (like frequently getting "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED" BSODs) and this one is the most troubling: when unplugged my laptop is supposed to be operating on the integrated Intel GPU for purely regular desktop tasks yet I experienced dGPU-like battery drain (similar to how awful my GL502VM was off-plug and with that laptop there was nothing I could do about it). I would expect with a 55Wh battery I could get around 5-6 hours on an iGPU yet it only got 2-ish during my first major battery jaunt. In Task Manager I was observing activity on the dGPU but, as this is the first switchable laptop I've owned, I'm not sure if that's typical when using the iGPU (since I would expect the dGPU would have to have some sense of awareness to be ready to take over when needed).

Due to cloning a smaller SSD to a larger one, I'm probably going to reformat this thing shortly in order to properly repartition the drive (and hopefully smooth out all the other issues I've experienced; though I need to figure out how to restore all the dumb gaming utilities since they do help in monitoring things like fan speed) but I'd like to know more about how switchable graphics should work because this doesn't seem right.

Sounds like a driver issue. You can also go in to the nVida control panel and disable the dGPU, assuming the drivers are all in order. As for the utilities, they are all on Asus's site.

Brands I wholeheartedly reccomend (though do have flawed products): Apple, Razer, Corsair, Asus, Gigabyte, bequiet!, Noctua, Fractal, GSkill (RAM only)

So is it the Nvidia driver that manages the display switching?

This does have an Nvidia driver installed but it wants to install a newer Game-Ready driver (but my laptop keeps crashing while it's downloading).

Use DDU and install a new driver (try to avoid latest)
