Nvme or ssd

so i can get a 1tb ssd for $20 more than a 500gb 970 evo plus nvme  

 

i mainly play games i have one other drive ands its a hdd 2tb

But yeah for mainstream usage and stuff like gaming you do not need a 970 Evo+ it is a waste of money when you can just double capacity with a decent enough different SSD

Unless it's a terrible ssd the 1tb will be the better option. You won't use the NVME to it's full potential if you only play games

i would personally go for the higher capacity sata ssd. i dont have other nvme drives to transfer data between and i wont notice much difference between a fraction of a second faster load times but i will notice when i run out of space

I'd always go for Nvme, there's a lot of models the have the exact same price and specs but more than 3x faster read speed if you go NVMe

On paper.  Real world shows almost no difference vs SATA SSDs in all but the most specific workloads.

 

That said, the new group of pseudo-NVMe drives are as cheap or cheaper than the good SATA drives so can make sense.

While this is fun, it is not as useful on average as having twice the storage capacity

If you only care for synthetic benchmarks, sure.

 

If you want value for your money then nope.

 

Even if you do go for NVMe, usually the cheaper P1 and 660p are the way to go.

In games as OP said he'll use it for, you get faster load times with NVMe rather than sata, especially between the 970 and the 860 evo but if you need more space than sata is also fast enough. As with most tech things it depends on what you're gonna use it for

Oh yes, sacrificing half your storage capacity for this kind of faster load time is entirely justified, Entry level Sata3 vs NVMe vs PCIe:
