Corsair vs Winter and some other rambling

samuel

Sorry for bad image quality....
23ron79.jpg
That was my PSU for like 3 months until it died unexpectedly. Bought it from a friend wich did not need a 500w PSU. Anyway, I'm not a Corsair hater, is just that my cheapo semi modular Super Flower rocks right now.
About the winter stuff... My CPU cooler is nothing special, it has a 80mm fan on a not so dense heatsync, but it does the job better than the stock cooler with very very low noise (due to my 120mm Coolink PWM fan attatched with custom (hand)made copper wires to the heatsync). But Piledriver it's hot, so I cannot just overclock my CPU further without toasting it. Util this morning: did some cleaning in my house, and left all the dors opened to get some fresh air. Also opened my PC to play some songs while doing the work. BOOM: 0 degreeds celius on the VRM, 2 degreeds celsius CPU temp itself. OKay, restarted HWinfo to make sure it's not a software bug. Nope, it was not. Immediatly after, an evil smile was showing up on my face. I HAD to do some sub-zero Overclocking. FX8320@5 GHZ 1.5v 15 min OCCT and I stopped, it was too cold for my skin.
Sadly, I forgot to do some screenshots, just now I had the idea to start this post. Hopefully it was not a bad one.
Verdict: don't buy Corsair CX and you can overclock like the big boys without expensive nitrogen or monster coolers.

I've built custom WC rig with dual GPU and CPU and overclocked the shit out it on a CX750M, and a 4770k / 780 on a CX 500M

Tough shit about your PSU but it happens, nothing wrong with CX series for the price.

I'm skeptical that you actually had the temperatures that were shown. I've had my windows open in -40C weather and my 4770k never got that low even on a stock clock.

my crappy thermaltek psu handles very well so far nothing died because of psu related issues ,i decided to increase the overclock a bit on my mining rig and let the window open when it was bit cold

although i am suprised that you were able to push it to 5ghz with 500w psu

Check that on AMD. My other rig (Dual Core E5500 775 platform) cannot get below 34 degreeds on the cores. A software limit I supose.

my 4770k @ 4.8ghz got down below 18 degrees through a similar idea of opening doors and windows. under load didnt peak over 65 so i would say it can make a difference however no one wants to deal with that kind of cold just for a big oc.

It was low, but it certainly was in the 0-5 range. The only way I've ever achieved that is with LN2 - but I tend to ruin hardware that way, so I haven't done it in a while - hah.

yeah thats my issue :/ its fun here and there if you wanna show your friends up though. then again ive only ruined one cpu and motherboard with ln2 the rest survived though the cpu's didnt clock so well even at stock anymore :P lol

I ended up throwing out most of the parts after I screwed up the last time. I haven't been back to LN2 since - not because I'm scared or anything, but just because I'm too lazy to take the time to set it up and potentially ruin $600+ in components, hah.

Wait what ?, did you put your PC near anything below ambient temperature when it was already hot ?.

And you wonder why your PSU broke?, I wonder why not more parts broke.

Unless you watercool it with vodka i do not recommend it.

since water freezes below zero and to counter if you put anti freeze in it your waterblocks and rads will die.

That PSU broke in the last spring in normal 18-25 degreeds ambient temps. It was startin for like 1 sec and power off by itself. A very common problem for CX 400/430/500... Don't have that link anymore to prove that. My current PC is located near the door in my room after wich you can find the holl, Yes, it was running at sub zero temps but not like -20 (when a hdd could start to have some issues.). It's not like my pc is running watercooling and the liquid inside froze or something like that. All modern PC parts are designed to withstand less then -10 degreeds but at a certain air moisture of wich I'm pretty damn sure it was a dry russian like clear sky freeze outside.
