Hello tech lovers!

I was hoping I could get some advice for a new laptop for me as a computer science student. I want something that won’t slow down or crash when I have many apps open. Unfortunately my budget is  tight. ($700-1000)

I want a laptop with the following capacities and I hope y’all could give me some suggestions:

- i7 processor, 16gb ram OR 8gb ram(expandable to up to 16gb)

- at least full HD display

- overall good battery life and cooling system

- preferably 15” laptop

I’ll highly appreciate your suggestions. Anything not more than  $800 would be ideal, but I’m open to all your suggestions.

Thank you! @Linus Apple Techtip Help bro!

I'd look into maybe a vivobook or an older XPS 13 model like the 9360

It's definitely not tight

Where are you from? Need dGPU?

Thanks man. The zenbook looks attractive to me. Would you recommend it?

I've heard really good things about the Zenbook, but I'm currently running a cheapo version of Asus' lineup, a vivobook. I think you probably can't go wrong with either lines, as long as you're keeping in mind the specs you need.

You should be getting a decent 1080p display and decent battery life out of any of them I reckon.

You may consider looking at something like an Acer Swift 3 w/ i5 8250u (Intel REALLY ramped up their mobile CPU's 8th gen) and Nvidia MX150. I think that thing will give pretty much anyone all the horsepower they'd need from a laptop. Past that, you start looking into higher-power bulky laptops, or just looking at desktops at that point. Only thing is, I'm not sure if the Swift 3 has an option for 16GB RAM, and I believe they're soldered on, so you'd need to make sure you get what you need from the start.

Hope that helped! :)

Both lineup have issues, not to mention that Asus laptop QC+QA is poor

Some models don't have non-upgradeable RAM

I just need something with a decent battery life. I care less about sRGB and dGPU.

FYI i5/R5 ULV and i7/R7 ULV don't have much performance difference (CPU raw power)

Under $800, 15 inch

Lenovo Thinkpad E595 with FHD IPS - unknown battery life (probably 5-7 hrs), higher CPU performance compared to E590 due to higher power limit, need to add RAM and SSD by yourself

Lenovo Yoga 730 15 81JS0088US (iGPU model) - conservative thermals due to convertible form factor, high sRGB display, 1 free RAM slot

Lenovo Flex 15 81SR000RUS - conservative thermals

HP Probook 450 G6 customize - UWVA (IPS), 65w adapter, need to upgrade RAM and SSD by your own

HP Probook 455R G6 customize (3500U) - UWVA (IPS) with optional 400 nits high sRGB option, 65w adapter, need to upgrade RAM and SSD by your own, unknown battery life

HP Envy x360 15t customize

HP Envy x360 15z customize

Acer Swift 3 SF315-52-51NV +RAM+SSD

Acer Aspire 5 A515-54-51DJ
