GameSpy shut down

Wyre

After 14 years GameSpy has shut down.   RIP:   Feb. 21, 2013

GoodbyeTop.jpg

GameSpy, as we know it, began in 1999. Today, 14 years later, it has reached the end of the road. We had a good run, and we want to sincerely thank all of you for reading and joining in discussions with us. It's been fantastic.

Just to be clear, we're not being shut down because PC gaming isn't a big, important, and growing thing -- because it is. That's not even debatable. It's not even because the GameSpy staff did a bad job of talking about it. Hell, from where I'm sitting we did anawesome job, particularly in covering the technical quality of PC versions of cross-platform games in our Port Authority features, reality-checking the hype of about-to-be-released big games with our Questions & Concerns series, delving into the nuances of MMORPGs, strategy, MOBAs, and simulations in our columns, regularly checking up on free-to-play games in Free Agent, calling out Microsoft's neglect of PC gamers, mocking Ubisoft's claims of a day-and-date PC release of Assassin's Creed 3, breaking the news on SimCity's lack of save/reload, and of course our amazingly bizarre The War Z interview.

For gamers out there that are of more advanced years. GameSpy was the only way that we could connect with friends, search for servers, and catch up on gaming news. For me at least this is a very sad day

LOL, that is true... but the game search servers were working until last week. Looks like they finally shutdown the back end servers.

barely remember this company because i never cared about them.

If you are really 12 then it is normal that Gamespy means nothing to you at all. Its popularity started to fade toward the latter half of the 2000s when they started making questionable decisions (Comrade software, Gamespy client). Before their death though they were not part of the software side of Gamespy anymore and the site had some good content (albeit scares due to their size)

This site alongside fileplanet would really mean a ton to people that used it in the late 1990s and early 2000s. fileplanet (also closed) was one of the bigger hub were you could easily find patches, demos, mods, betas. Also they had a kick ass subscription model that allowed you to get some pretty cool free games (I had about 5-6 of them but cant remember my login nor do I believe they would still honor that).

Overall thought it was part of my daily routine and I was pretty sad when they closed the site and somewhat annoyed (but also glad the writers found a job) when most of the Gamespy team was added to IGN PC.

Nice gig, AAA publishers pay big money for positive reviews which is what IGN is all about.

that sucks, they hosted quite a few servers...

Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.

As I get older I get angrier more cynical, meaner. I feel some warning posts coming. I feel a ban coming. I was warned.

wrong Gamespy. they split up a while back. The one that got closed what the editorial gamespy, not the servers one (which i believe is also closed lol)

GameSpy was the reason you had to go through the setup manually, rather than automatically, so you could uncheck the install box. That's how i remember GameSpy. :P

who cares...
