Whats up guys,

So basically I'm in the market for a new high end gaming rig - Looking at about 1800$ for the PC only.

How long will this setup (i7 4770K, GTX 780 Ti, 16GB ram, high end mobo, ssd, sick cpu cooler etc.) last me?
Is it reasonable to think ill get about 5 years out of the thing when doing nothing but maybe OC'ing down the line?

Obviously I'm not expecting Ultra settings at crazy res's for 5 years, more like just being able keep up with games decently for 5 or more years down the line.

Linus do a video on this! "How long will your High end gaming PC last you"

Thanks in advance guys.  :)

Extremely hard to say, computer technology is jumping very quickly. It may not seem like it. However you could find one might say 2-3 years, and in a year from now you're screwed.

Why don't you just build a $700 rig now and then 2-3 years from now build another $700 rig and be happy?

With the current grwoth I'd say the GPU lasts 3 years. Then the new graphics card from Nvidia should come out, which are not a rebadge of Maxwell.

CPUs last pretty long, but who knows what happens? A Core 2 Duo Q6600 is still a good CPU when slightly overclocked. So technically the 4770K could last you 5 years, maybe more, maybe less.

Maybe multi core usage has established enough, so that low energy 24-cores perform better than a high performance quadcore.

who cares...

He did:

Damn! That is the perfect video on this subject. I didn't even realize I was asking "How futureproof is my pc" lol, Thanks.

Buy a 1000$ system now and another one a few years down the line, or splash 2000$ now, that is the question.

What would you guys say?

Um... I'm guessing it's good for maybe 2-3 years.

Wanna hang out with me and people like @Theslsamg, @ Ssoele, @BENTHEREN, @Lanoi, @Whiskers, @_ASSASSIN_, @Looney, @WunderWuffle, and @nsyedhasan. Well.... Check out: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/48484-unofficial-linustechtips-teamschnitzel-server-teamspeak/

If you're willing to compromise, I'd say it's doable. i.e. I'm getting ready to update (well new system but you get the point) but I'm still running on an nvidia GTX 260 from 2008 or 2009 (cant remember) I've been steadily tuning down game detail on my games and only recently (late 2013) ran into games that were not running acceptable even on the lowest settings. Most people would not even consider not maxing out all the detail but I'm fine with scaling down to mid or low settings, even dropping the resolution a bit to keep going.

Going by current trends, I say that top end processors and graphics will be good performers for upwards of 4 generations (Nehalem & Phenom II are still solid). A GTX 480 can still hang in there at medium to high settings (1080p), but if you go further back than this, you will less than above average results (Core 2 Quad, GTX 290).
