There is a lot to think about.

JS / C# or C++

C# OR C++/blueprints

Focus on 2D or 3D?

Both are 3D optimized.

Free or paid?

Both are free to a point.

I would say unreal as it is free. Though if C# is important for you Godot is free and open-source.

Not unity nor unreal but Godot is a good alternative that’s gaining a ton of support & can use a variety of languages.

Unity is much easier.

Unity can be easier to get started with.

Unreal is more powerful and more optimized.

Unreal is more graphically intense.

The difference comes down to

1. Do you want to make games for fun? Do you want to be an independent developer? Make mobile games?

Unity is more common in the independent realm & many studios making VR & mobile games use Unity.

2. If you want to specialise in a specific discipline of game programming, Unreal is more respected in the AAA community. Console & PC games. It’s also capable of VR but it’s not known for that.

You can be an independent developer using unreal but it’s less common than unity. There’s less freely available assets & it has a higher INITIAL learning curve. After that it works differently from unity.

EDIT

What do you want to do? There may be a better program for you that’s not Unity/unreal

what program should I use to code unreal or unity?
