Low profile but decent PC's for family. Under $400 each.

Ok, let me start this by saying I never thought I would have been writing one of these, as I usually help other people with this stuff. But I need help looking the smalling form factors, without spending too much. I think I will try to build one, but I know cheap small PCs are usually good when Pre Built. Not sure which path I'll choose yet, but are there any reccomendations for small cases/motherboards/prebuilts? Thanks. I will get probably 2 and stick them behind a monitor is a small space. Most certainly going Ryzen btw. Thanks!

Edit: Decided to add more information. First, nothing used unless it is so cheap where it is almost free. Second, will be used for school related things, maybe YouTube, mostly web things with few word document editing kind of stuff. Might possibly be used for light games, such as Minecraft or Roblox. No high setting games are needed, so an iGPU should be fine if not I can get a 1030 or something similar if it fits. 8GB ram is plenty, but if in budget Ill upgrade RAM and Storage. I don't really think I should get a 2010 optiplex even if it is new, because you know 5200rpm old hard drives and bulkier stuff. Don't want something so small and un upgrade/repairable, like an Intel NUC. I'm thinking something small from those companies like HP, Dell, Asus, Acer, etc. Hardware no older than 5 years is pretty much the rule here. Hope this helped.

if you need it to be really small you could always go for an intel NUC.

If you're not adverse to buying used, look into used Optiplexes or the like that businesses sometimes sell off. Many are quite small, and come equipped with competent enough CPUs. I've seen some small Ivy Bridge Optiplexes sell for less than $50 last year. The iGPUs are pretty dated though, if gaming is a consideration.

The HP Prodesk stuff with Haswell are very cheap on eBay these days and plenty decent for everyday 'normal' use like Youtube and Facebook. I guess we need to know the intended use and intended lifespan.

Considered that but at the same time in a few years if one thing is obsolete, can't really upgrade, and its not like a normal desktop or laptop where I can easily just salvage a case or something.
