Some website developers like doing different things. For example
Some do
www.example.tld
or 
main.example.tld
or 
example.tld
OR EVEN
example.tld/main/
maybe even

www.example.tld/main/

It is all SEO and design. In robots.txt for this website:

As I understand it (although it was before my time), it was to allow things other than the forums to be hosted on the domain - the site used to be Linus's blog before the forum came around. It might end up getting dropped, but there's no particular reason to do so other than aesthetics.

Now I understand. Thanks a lot! I first thought about maybe the LTT store on this domain.

They used to have a beta 'front page' with some news and blog articles on it. That was in the way way past though.
