calling all skilled network pros... I need HELP!

mr moose

Now I have your attention, I would like someone to educate me on the possibilities of playing Hexen with a friend across the internet.

The game for those not familiar:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexen:_Beyond_Heretic

I believe the game uses  IPX protocols on local network to enable co operative multiplayer.  So what I ultimately want is a network setup across the internet (like vpn or something) that the game will see as a local network and allow IPX between myself and anyone other computer that joins the network.

Cheers for any help.

I'm no networking expert, but would something like Hamachi work? https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/download.aspx

Thanks, That looks promising, do you/anyone know how secure it is?

I'm pretty sure you can add a password to prevent other people accessing your session, beyond that I have no idea, I've never had any worries about using it though.

You had me for a second, but then I read the actual question. You do not need a professional for that...

hamachi's decent, I mean you're playing games after all, not sending secret codes through some minute vibration of sounds that'll bring ww3 - right?

by the way can't help but to remember some young hobos back in seattle holding a sign saying BEER!!! then with little writing on the bottom

now that I got your attention, spare some change? hilarious :P

If i recall correctly, when you copy wsock32.dll into the root folder of the game it lets you use TCP/IP instead of IPX. Works for some games.

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)

Any VPN service should work just fine. Used to play quake with friends using Hamachi.
