Switching out fans on Noctua D15 D15S ?

jamsincali

Hey guys.

So with the Noctua D15 Series I know it comes with fans but clearance is a little tricky. My question is what will I see different when it comes to switching out the stock 140s for 120mm?

Here are the fan specs. LNA = Low Noise Adapter

Stock

2 NF-A15S 140MM

Speed 1500/1200LNA

CFM 82.51/67.98LNA

PRESSURE 2.08/1.51LNA

NOISE DB 24.6/19.2LNA

Possible Replacements

2 NF-F12 120MM

Speed 1500/1200LNA

CFM 54.97/43.78

PRESSURE 2.61/1.83LNA

NOISE DB 22.4/18.4

So if I just look at the numbers the 120mm is gonna be quiet at both normal and LNA settings. The 140mm will have  MUCH HIGHER CFM at normal and LNA setting. Lastly the 120mm has way more static pressure at full speed and a higher pressure rating at low noise setting.

This is going on a chip that has a TDP rating of 165W

Your help is greatly appreciated

J

If RAM clearance is an issue, you can always move the fan upwards a bit.  Not the prettiest of sights, but then again neither is a 120mm wide fan on a 150mm wide cooler.

True. But how would the NF-F12's perform compared to the stock ones?

I think it will performs in between D15S & D15, since the D15S only use single 140mm, and D15 use a pair 140mm, while your plan will be 140+120mm.

The difference between D15 & D15S is only 1-3C, and it's negligible.

The 2000rpm iPPC NF-F12's at 15v is probably pretty representative of the performance.

So from hwcooling's example, going from 65c with stock fans to 68.5c with NF-F12's.

You're probably better off with a single NF-A15 at the middle which wouldn't get in the way of anything. What case and ram are you using?
