My gtx 1080 FE's R15 score is low

So I was bored so I did an R15 Open GL test on my 1080 FE 8gb.I have had it since early September. (I had it on another drive and just transfered it to my main drive). I did the test and got a 117.91. I then went online to compare other scores and saw that my same card got a 169. I thought this was quite strange. Did I accidentally underclock my gpu? I took a screenshot and added it to this post. Please Help, I am semi-new to Computer Hardware.

GPU is fine, R15's GPU bench is absolutely horribly badly despicably terrible, that's the issue. Run something like Unigine Heaven, Valley, Superposition, or any of the 3DMark suite. Those are proper GPU benchmarks.

I ran a heavan benchamrk and got significantly under what this website got. Same settings and everything.

Hmmmmm... in your screenshot of afterburner it's sitting at 1607, which is the proper baseclock, so it's not underclocked. What are your temps like and how high does it boost? Based on the specs it should hit 1700 at least, but most 1080s go much, much beyond that. My AIB cards (EVGA 1080 SCs, much better cooler) did 2100 on the core manually, about 1900-2000 on their own. If your temps are too high pascal won't boost well though.

Can you dub that down for me and tell me what you want me to do to further investigate this?

You should be able to turn on Afterburner's in-game overlay. I think it's the 3rd or 4th tab in MSI Afterburner's settings (can get screenshots and such when I get home, am at work on a Mac rn though so I can't even run afterburner), There'll be a list of a bunch of stats, click on one then in the lower half (info section) check the "show in overlay" option. You'll want to show GPU temperature and core clock for sure, I usually enable GPU memory clock, fps, and frametimes as well. Then when you run Unigine Valley it should be in the top left of the screen and you can eyeball the GPU core clock vs temperature. You should be hitting at least 1700Mhz, hopefully 1800-1900 or higher, depends on your temperatures. If your card is running really hot you'll need to go to the fan profile in Afterburner settings, enable custom fan profile, and set it to ramp up higher at around 60C or hotter. For troubleshooting purposes right now, I'd put it to 100% and deal with the noise. Click the button on the bottom right corner of Fan Speed that says "Auto", that should give you manual control of the fans. Then just drag the slider to 100%. 

 

I'm assuming your temps are wack and your GPU doesn't boost as high as the reviewer's GPU did. GPU Boost 3.0 on Pascal cards (the whole 1000 series from Nvidia) is very temperature sensitive, the colder the GPU is the better.

80C or above on Pascal, but yours is an FE so 80C would be acceptable. Buuut for boost purposes, you'd want to keep your card at or under 70C. If you can keep it at 60C or 50C that'd be awesome, but I doubt an FE cooler will do that without destroying your hearing (my aforementioned 1080 SCs with a much better cooler stayed at 66C, 76C in SLI).

okay i am getting 1810 mhz for gpu and 78 celcius

also, when i am in my room pretty much no one else is in here when I use my pc so fan noise isnt that big of an issue

So a little bit hot, not bad at all for the boost though. I'd chalk the difference in scores up to a different CPU and driver updates, but 300 points is a rather large difference. Are you noticing any lack of performance in games though?

kind of, but this is my first desktop so i dont really know how parts age and stuff. Also, my pc was corrupted a while ago, and i had to redo windows idk if that would be a part of it. If I can get the score better tjat would be great

I doubt it'd mess with the GPU unless your drivers got borked, but that'd result in straight up crashes. Also keep in mine those scores are from 3 years ago, that's a lot of driver updates and such since then. You could always try manually OCing it if you can keep it around 75C, Jayztwocents has some excellent videos on OCing various generations of GPUs:

I look at this video, but should i change the fan speeds and ramp ups at certain temperatures?

Yeah, you want to stay below 80C for sure, preferably around 75C because it's an FE cooler. If you had a better cooler you'd want to shoot for 65-70C or lower under full load. I know AMD stuff is fine with running hot, but IIRC you want to stay below 85C for sure on Pascal. IDK how hot you actually have to get it to hurt the GPU in the long term, but I'd try and avoid the 80s. I try to on my AMD cards too, they're just toasty little rascals.

ok, ill change gpu fan ramp up temps, if you have a certain config i should try then sen dit or ill just kinda of guess

i changed the fan speeds and i am getting 64 celcius and 1848 in valley, I can ramp up the fans even more, because they are still silent

I tend to have it ramp up really aggressively on blower coolers. Decide on the max temp you're comfortable with (say 75C in this case) and set it to be 100% at around 73-74 so hopefully it'll stay below that. Then scale it down from there, say 80% at 70C, 60% at 60C, easing it on down to be really quiet around or below 50C so it's not really loud when your PC idles.

Heck yeah, ramp the fans up and give it a maximum temperature and power target (drag the power and temp limit sliders as high as they go) and see how it does. If you let it run for 20-30 minutes and it's staying at a good temperature, then you can drop the fans down a bit if it's loud, or push the GPU clocks up because you have thermal headroom.

Not at all. Nvidia locked down Pascal a lot, it won't actually let you push an unsafe voltage, and if it gets too hot it'll automatically downclock/downvolt or shut itself off.

Not at all. Nvidia locked down Pascal a lot, it won't actually let you push an unsafe voltage, and if it gets too hot it'll automatically downclock/downvolt or shut itself off. 

I tried to overclock a couple months ago and my pc would shut down a lot so i brought it back down

How high did you try and push it? I usually go by 25Mhz increments till it's unstable, then bring it down to the last stable one. Also, only change core clock or memory clock (I usually do core first). If you change both at the same time, stuff gets wacky quick.

I just ran the test for 30 mins and am at 64 c. Idk how high i pushed it. Is there a way to autmatically do it in after burner?
