speedtest.net showing faster speed

Calling John
Go to solution Solved by pommedeterror007,

The servers are sometimes just super picky. I always choose/select a server of an ISP (like comcast/xfinity, Time Warner, Wave, ATT etc). I always test 2-3 Servers. If it doesnt seem right you can also use googles tester.

using speedtest.net the default server it chooses has a 13-19ms ping  and shows a much faster speed then i get when downloading and uploading a file even when i choose a server that is faraway that has a 335ms ping  download speed is still faster then i get when downloading same with the upload speed it shows

what could be causing this?

Where are you downloading and uploading a file from? Theoretically downloading and uploading a file from say, google drive or microsoft onedrive should have the same speed results as speedtest.net. The only other cause could be slow disk space. Is your storage drive low on space or generally slow?

CPU - FX 8350 @ 4.5GHZ GPU - Radeon 5700  Mobo - M5A99FX Pro R2.0 RAM - Crucial Ballistix 16GB @ 1600 PSU - Corsair CX600M CPU Cooler - Hyper 212 EVO Storage - Samsung EVO 250GB, WD Blue 1TB

like when i download a youtube video using idm it will download around 5.5megabites a second to 6.2megabites but my speedtest says when i do a speed test on the server close to me i should be able to download at 29megabites a second when i have done tests on 2 servers that are over  300ms ping it says my download speed is like around 9 to 12megabites a second and the hdd in my computer is a very fast ssd

I don't know anything about IDM but perhaps there's a setting in the program throttling your download speeds. Is this only a problem in IDM or are downloads also slow in a web browser too?
