Is 9700K worth 150 USD more than 3700X?

You either want the 9900k, 9600k or 8700K. Those are your best choice if you want to go the Intel route.

I honestly dont understand how the 9900kf has not caught on yet.  When I got mine (K), they were literally the same price as the KF.  There was no point.

Now the KF is 420.  They have breached the <100 dollar mark for a 9900 compared to 3700x (as everyone knew they would have to do to compete).  If I was even remotely thinking about intel I would be leaning toward a KF.  8 cores, 16 threads, will be good for the next console generation at least, high freq with the ability to get an all core 5.0-5.1.  Now that the KF has dropped a good bit, I wouldn't even be thinking about 9700k vs 3700x.  It surely would be 9900KF vs 3700x.  If the KF drops any more (to around 400) I wouldn't think about it twice if I was looking at gaming only.

I think this is the first step for them, they honestly need to come down more in price to be more competitive (intel that is) but this very much blurs the lines.  Without having a new release or any new tech, they need to lower prices again if they dont want to get crushed by the immense value AMD is providing.

El Zoido:  9900k + RTX 4090 / 32 gb 3600mHz RAM / z390 Aorus Master

The Box:  3900x + RTX 3080 /  32 gb 3000mHz RAM / B550 MSI mortar

Yeah, I think $150 USD is much too large of a price difference to justify 9700k over 3700X. 9700k still has value for people who only play video games, but the CPU+motherboard price has to be a lot closer to AMD for the 9700k to be worth buying. 50% more money for something like 7-9% more performance at 1080p with a RTX 2080ti (???) is dumb.

Now, I dunno if you meant this generally, or if it's aimed directly at my case, but if it's the second option then I would just like to point out that I am not going to be using 2080Ti at 1080p but 2080 at 1440p.

If only that was true for us non US customers. Currently 9900KF is over $600 thats over 1/3 more than the 3700x.

Thanks everyone for the input regarding the CPUs, I have decided to stick with the 3700x. Will swap out the PSU for Dark Power 11, it's cheaper and supposedly far quieter. Still not sure about the board, to be honest. Hero VI might be cheap but it is quite old.

don’t get that motherboard for the amd build. It’s an old X370 board. I would go with AMD here.

Sorry, I meant it generally. Reviewers often benchmark CPUs in video games by playing them at 1080p with the best GPU available, because that is better at depicting how the CPU performs without any GPU limitations. It shows the biggest differences between CPUs while gaming. But no one is using a $1000+ GPU to play games at 1080p, so it’s sort of an unrealistic scenario to judge CPU performance.
