Think you'll need to find an updated install guide, the PPA you're trying to use has been discontinued.

Quote

Oracle Java (JDK) 8 Installer PPA (DISCONTINUED)

The Oracle JDK License has changed for releases starting April 16, 2019.

The new Oracle Technology Network License Agreement for Oracle Java SE is substantially different from prior Oracle JDK licenses. The new license permits certain uses, such as personal use and development use, at no cost -- but other uses authorized under prior Oracle JDK licenses may no longer be available. Please review the terms carefully before downloading and using this product. An FAQ is available here: https://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/overview/oracle-jdk-faqs.html

Oracle Java downloads now require logging in to an Oracle account to download Java updates, like the latest Oracle Java 8u211 / Java SE 8u212. Because of this I cannot update the PPA with the latest Java (and the old links were broken by Oracle).

For this reason, THIS PPA IS DISCONTINUED (unless I find some way around this limitation).

Oracle Java (JDK) Installer (automatically downloads and installs Oracle JDK8). There are no actual Java files in this PPA.

Important -> Why Oracle Java 7 And 6 Installers No Longer Work: http://www.webupd8.org/2017/06/why-oracle-java-7-and-6-installers-no.html

Update: Oracle Java 9 has reached end of life: http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/jdk9-downloads-3848520.html

The PPA supports Ubuntu 18.10, 18.04, 16.04, 14.04 and 12.04.

More info (and Ubuntu installation instructions):
http://www.webupd8.org/2012/09/install-oracle-java-8-in-ubuntu-via-ppa.html

Debian installation instructions:
- Oracle Java 8: http://www.webupd8.org/2014/03/how-to-install-oracle-java-8-in-debian.html

For Oracle Java 11, see a different PPA -> https://www.linuxuprising.com/2019/06/new-oracle-java-11-installer-for-ubuntu.html

Basically http://ppa.launchpad.net/webupd8team doesn't exist anymore.

Link for workaround: http://www.webupd8.org/2012/09/install-oracle-java-8-in-ubuntu-via-ppa.html (as in above quote)

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/java
sudo apt-get update

But when I run java and javac -version, it says they are the latest version:

root@basicserver:/home/jack# java -version
openjdk version "1.8.0_212"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_212-8u212-b03-2~deb9u1-b03)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.212-b03, mixed mode)
root@basicserver:/home/jack# javac -version
javac 1.8.0_212
root@basicserver:/home/jack#

You may have the latest JDK installed, from that PPA or another, but as it stands today that PPA doesn't exist which is why apt-get update is failing.

Remove that PPA, but that isn't going to help you get done what you need to but it will remove the error for apt-get update. You'll likely have to find a Hadoop setup guide that has been updated after April that accounts for Oracle's license change which is the root cause of this problem.

Would that be the launchpad PPA or webupd8?

Also how do I remove it (not that familiar with PPAs)?

To remove repositories, you need to remove it from sources.

Depending how it was added it will either be defined in /etc/apt/sources.list or it will have it's own definition file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

The webupd8 PPA was discontinued a few months ago.

If you can use OpenJDK (in most cases you can) then I recommend installing that instead.

You can also find an older compiled deb package of Oracle JDK 8 here: https://deb.pkgs.org/universal/opennms-stable-amd64/oracle-java8-installer_8u131-1~webupd8~2_all.deb.html

Keep in mind you wont be able to update that and compiling your own is an extreme pain in the ass.
