Help! Ryzen 3000 workstation build

I have recently decided to build a ryzen 3000 workstation for video editing and CAD. I would like to keep the cost of this build under $700. So far i have spent $116 for a 650w PSU, a 1080p monitor, and speakers. I plan to use a keyboard, mouse, and case that I have. That leaves $584 for a CPU, GPU, MoBo, RAM, and an SSD. I will be near a Micro Center next month and the $50 off CPU/MoBo would help. Below is the list of components i was planning on purchasing.

  • Ryzen 5 3600 - Micro Center - $200
  • Rx 580 8gb - Ebay -$130-160 refurbished
  • AsRock B450M Pro4 - Micro Center - $20 with $50 combo discount
  • I need at least 16gb but I don't know what will work best with ryzen 3000 for less that $100
  • Mushkin Pilot 500gb - Amazon - $65

I am open to sugesstions for this build. Please help me figure out what RAM to use.

regards,

Andy

Ok, Thanks for the info. What graphics card do you suggest that I get for less than $200? How much better is an rx 580 than an rx 570? I will spend more for a quality card that won't give trouble.

I have concerns about putting a a Ryzen 3600 in the AsRock B450M Pro 4. In addition to the heat concerns, you would need Micro Center to upgrade the BIOS unless it comes with a BIOS Flashback feature (unless you have access to an older Ryzen CPU to update the BIOS.) You might have a look at the MSI Tomahawk which has the BIOS Flashback feature.

DDR4 3200 CAS 16 would be good. DDR4 3000 CAS 14-16 to be safe.

Thanks for the RAM info! The BIOS is not a problem a I have access to a Ryzen 5 2400g. What do you mean by heat concerns?

The new Ryzen 3000 chips require more cooling than the previous generation chips, but mainly the higher core models. That Asrock may be fine. I'm just not sure. The microATX boards have less surface area to dissipate the heat.

The 3600 actually has a lower TDP than the 2600 (65 vs 95), so I think that board will be fine. I think the concern would be for a high thread CPU like the 3950X.

You're good to go on that Asrock B450M Pro4 as long as new BIOS are available. I would drop down to DDR4 3000 CAS 14-16 to be safe, though. Here's testing on the Asrock AB350M Pro4:

Should I pay $10 more for the B450 Pro4 ATX? Also, Would this RAM be a good option? Is Team T-FORCE good?

I would get DDR 3000 for that MB just to make sure you don't run into any issues (see the previous youtube link.)

The Asrock ATX and mATX are pretty similar. I can't remember the differences. Go to the Asrock site and do a compare and get the one you like the best. The ATX looks better in a full size case with a window if that makes a difference.

Ok, Will Trident Z or Corsair PRO RGB work? Newegg has them both on sale; $70 for 2x8gb. Can i underclock 3200 RAM to 3000? Im also thinking about going with this GTX 1660 GPU.

I had t review the video to refresh my memory. It did post with the 3200, it just failed the stress test.

I think that Ballistix 3200 is probably fine and you can underclock it if needed. The Trident  or Corsair Pro would be equally good. If you want to be 100% sure, then get RAM that has been tested in that motherboard:

EVGA reportedly has great customer service and a GPU upgrade program if you register your GPU soon after purchase. The double fan models have larger heat sinks and are usually quieter, but that one gets great reviews. I don't know what program you are using for CAD and how much it depends on the GPU and how close we are to exceeding your budget. By the way, Micro Center is giving another $50 off if you get the 5700 with the MB (I think) but I guess that might put too much strain on the budget.

Ok, I'll see if MC still has that deal for the 5700 when i'm there! This RAM is on sale for $60 at Newegg and on the Mfg. website they say it is compatible with B450.

All the DDR4 is compatible with B450 at least in the usual 8/16 GB sizes and frequencies listed on the MB manufacturer's specification page. Most RAM will work fine but the memory configurators have pre-tested it for you. You can also check the QVL list of any MB that you are interested in, e.g.

I saw this but unfortunately its out of stock now. Keep an eye on it though, as they may get more stock. Both are excellent quality:

The combo is back in stock. I would get it. Its not NVMe like the Mushkin, but you won't notice the difference in use and the savings are good. Longer warranty too {5 vs 3 yrs)

Combo back in stock!

The RX 580 is a nice step up from the RX 570. I would get this one for $160.

Thanks. when i open your link to the combo it says not in stock. Should I grab that T-Force RAM for $60? Should I get the sapphire pulse 580 8gb for $170 or the armor 580 8gb for $160? There is also a 1060 6gb for $180.

Be sure and click on the auto notify button for the combo.

What software are you using for editing and CAD?

The 580's are a little more powerful than the 1060 6GB. Sapphire has a reputation for making good AMD cards. Read the professional and user reviews and get the one you like, but be careful with Amazon reviews because they mix different card reviews in the same section. At Newegg it seems that only dissatisfied users write reviews no matter what the component.

I have no idea, but unless my eyes deceived me, it's been going in and out of stock. Maybe give it another 11 hours and 59 minutes :)

660p 512gb $50 is it good? also Newegg has Armor 570 8gb for $120 after MIR so I will most likely get that as it is $40 less. The 2600 is $60 less is that a good option?
