My old thinkpad's fan stopped working.  so I decided to take a look at it. The motor part detached easily from the copper part. But there was a yellow greenish glue between the aluminum and the copper.  anyone knows what this glue is or if it can cause something like mercury poisoning?  thanks

It doesn't have mercury in it, so it probably won't cause mercury poisoning.  Where did you even get that thought from?

It's safe, it's just an epoxy.  Don't eat it and you'll be fine.

Splash of mercury won't kill you unless you swallow it.

Because of RoHS compliance heavy metals like Mercury & Lead are among the materials you're going to find very little or any of in electronics that follow said compliance (most of what ships to the US today). You'll see the RoHS logo on a sticker or the plastic on the bottom of the laptop.

That said though there are plenty of other substances in electronics that are pretty toxic to humans so just wash your hands when you're done. As much as I like to advocate for people repairing their own equipment if you're that worried about it why are you doing it?

I was not particularly worried at first .

The glue felt different from thermal paste or any other type of glue I have seen

This combined with the vague memory of an article by lenovo addressing mercury usage in their laptops made me a bit worried .

Anyhow thanks for answering. I appreciate it.

Don't eat things like that... Sheez, kids today....

Anyway, as mentioned above. All things that could cause any risk to human health are pretty much eliminated on consumer hardware. And if they aren't yet, they soon will be. Each country has its own government office that looks out for products that contain those kinds of materials over the set limits. So you can thank EU, Japan, Australia/New Zealand, Canada and South Korea for making sure majority of big consumer manufacturers stay on correct line.
