AMD Ryzen 9 3900x Tops Passmark Single Thread CPU chart (edit)

Hi all.
As many of you I've been eager to see the performance of the new AMD chips coming out compared to the Intel 9900k.
I've been watching the CPU mark-passmark charts, and since 9900k came out it held the top position in the single thread chart at stocks speed.
When intel released it's 9900KF version, in Passmark runs it's showing it beats the 9900K performance in single thread.

But now I see AMD Ryzen 7 3700x outperforming 9900k at default stock clocks.
And the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 taking the top position outperforming everything at stock clocks with 2981 points.
That's almost 100 points more than 9900k with 2898 points score for single threaded performance.
The score of 9900k is result of 2756 samples, so it's pretty accurate.
AMD 3600 is based just on 2 samples (probably some retailers getting the first shipment and testing it etc).
But as the AMD chips will be available/bought coming weeks, we'll see more measurements to average the score out.
Honestly I'm surprised to see it top the chart with 100 points over 9900k.

What are your thoughts?

I thought this was in Tech News, now I'm disappointed.
Tbh I only really care about the 3900x, because I'm probably buying that one.

Less than 24 hours for proper benchmarks, just hold on for a little longer now.

So far I've read 5ghz was achieved during benchmarks only with LN2 extreme cooling & tweaks, on MSI Godlike board ($800 approx. retail)
Even at stock clocks the cpu is quite heavy demanding on mboard's chipset & VRM, which is why most board manufacturers equipped it with internal chipset fan, and redesigning the entire VRM heatspreader, power caps & thicker PCB etc.
MSI also made statements on the features & reasons why it's become so expensive other than marketing on the success of the previous Gen series.
An $400-$800 board that's so taxed already, are you sure you want to push it to 5ghz?
I personally wouldn't really risk that with such high priced boards lol, and It makes me wonder about longevity when it's in OC use.
What's your approach on cooling it, water, air or going with LN2 too? :D

Sorry to hear you're disappointed. I almost got the feeling I had to post this in Tech News, and started this post in the wrong forum or something haha :3
Nice you're aiming for the 3900x. What built are you going for? game rig, rendering workstation?
I have my eye on the 3950x, but as linus and others have mentioned, the single thread performance is bit sacrificed in order to house more cores.
That's why I also check the other AMD chips performances both in single & multi threading, to see how much the difference are between them & other factors.

Ideally I want the 3950x to be as close as possible to the 9900k in single thread performance,
& perform significantly better than their last years flagship 2950x on multi thread at default clocks.
Before I feel justified investing $750 on the cpu & $500-$800 on an Asus or MSI board.
If the 3900x performs more favorably I might switch my build to that.
I'm going for an audio workstation btw. the single thread performance results in better realtime workflows & audio rendering,
and the multi thread perf results in better handling of heavier loaded sessions. That's why both are important in my case.
I've seen many go with 9900k for audio workstation builds, like they're just so fixated on the single thread perf.
But I'm not really that guy that gets on the bandwagon without checking the rest out.
I'd rather go left to find a gem when everyone goes right to find thrills, if you know what I mean :)
And I hope we'll get that gem for our next system. Cheers

I'm getting the 3900x because I do allot of rendering/encoding, and that type of stuff, but also I play Rainbow six siege semi-professionally. I have an R7 1700 atm, and that hits 100% cpu usage on siege sometimes causing me to fall to 130fps every now and then which I dont really like. I also wanna see if siege will utilize all 12c 24t..

I see. Thanks for replying. Seems like a good cpu for the job ^^
But haven't the developers of Rainbow six siege stated anywhere how many cores the game can utilize, that you now have to find out for yourself?
I've seen a game developer say last week one of their A-list games was designed to use 6c/12t at max, when asked about combatibility/support for higher core counts.
I can't recall the game title sorry, I think it was using the unigine platform. But I'm not sure, I merely glanced over the article.
Anyway I think it's good to check with the game dev team to know for certain. Cheers

The Passmark single thread score is what I use to pick gaming CPUs. Before the i9 9900k came out my i7 8086ks where on top. You can guess what CPU I would pick now.

:D Nice. You made your pick already, how can you be sure the results might not change drastically? I mean the bench results are barely in ^^

The difference in the top 8 can be put down to the silicon lottery. One of my i7 8086k is faster in single thread tests than a i9 9900k and one is slower. I would go with the R7 3700x.

 

Unlike GPU scores, CPU score don't change with driver updates so this it what it is.

 

Also I know from testing that my RTX 2080 ti needs a certain amount of IPC. The R7 2700x did not have it but the R7 3700x has. 

 

Since my i7 8086k is still near the top of the chart I have no reason to upgrade but if one of my computers died tomorrow the I would go Ryren unless Intel price matches.

The Passmark ladder changed already in one day, R9 3900x takes the top now ^^
It seems someone clocked in their 9900 too. both are single sample results. Interesting & exciting.
Should I adjust the title as 3900x takes the crown now? ^^ 3600 is not valid anymore :D

By the way I was reading up on power draw section of the deep review by anandtech just now.
And I might reconsider my choice from 3950x [16c/32t] towards 3900x [12c/24t].

The 3900x takes the crown in multi thread too.
And by a huge margin over the 9980XE & even the Xeon Platinum costing over $8k!
I'm totally blown away now...

edit: Look at the pricing,
R7 3700 at $509 is inaccurate as it retails at $329.99
R9 3900x is at $499

8000points difference between the AMD 8core (65w) & 12core (105w). My goodness...
How much difference will it make when 3950 16core gets it's run.
or will the diff be less huge as the added 4cores still operates in the specs of 105w & not by a 40w surplus.
But something needs to perform better in order to justify putting down +250 for the 3950 now.
mind blow at 3900x right now.
