I need inputs on how i should go about upgrading my PC. whather i should upgrade everything or just some things. My motherboard is a ROG MAXIMUS VIII FORMULA.

The Titan X is a Maxwell architechture. I was thinking if would it be ok to just upgrade to a i7-7700K and a new video card. I built this PC in 2015. I am asking because

all the hype around all these new parts  such as mothboard, CPU, GPU and everything. I just want to know whats the logical step to take. Another thing, does SLI make any

sense at the moment when it comes on to gaming?

Thanks in advance

makes better sense than 6700k to 7700k since they are very similar.

i.e. both are stupid

Moved to New Builds & Planning...

There's not a lot of difference between the 6700k and 7700k. Small clock boost, maybe the tiniest of IPC improvements but not much. They're essentially the same*. You may as well just overclock your 6700k (can see it's already 4.6GHz in screenshot so that's probably good enough).

Really no point investing in a "high end" 4c/8t CPU these days.

Nope. Most games don't support it these days and it's really just not worth the cost. Better off with just a single more powerful card.

There's new "Super" RTX refreshes coming from Nvidia and new AMD RX GPUs next week. Maybe wait a couple days for reviews comparing the two and see which gives the best performance or value and which meets your demands. New AMD Ryzen CPUs coming as well.

  • What's your budget for the upgrades?
  • What games are you playing?
  • What resolution/refresh rate is your monitor?
  • Are you doing any other tasks with the system like Video Editing, rendering, etc?

CPU: Intel i7 6700k  | Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170x Gaming 5 | RAM: 2x16GB 3000MHz Corsair Vengeance LPX | GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080ti | PSU: Corsair RM750x (2018) | Case: BeQuiet SilentBase 800 | Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34 eSports | SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 500GB + Samsung 840 500GB + Crucial MX500 2TB | Monitor: Acer Predator XB271HU + Samsung BX2450

  • I Currently do not want to go over $1500
  • I currenly play games like Gears of War 4, DMC5, GTA5 and games withing that caliber
  • My monitor is 2560 x 144p 144hz,  at time I hook up tp my 65'' 4K TV
  • No video editing but I do use Unity as a side job to do independent game dev, but not all the time.

I also have a 6700k. I game at 2560x1440p 144hz and while I don't play a lot of those games, the games I play my 6700k handles it fairly well, as well as to be expected from a ~4 year old CPU I guess.
The Titan X Maxwell is getting a bit dated though, is probably close to something like a GTX1070 or RTX2060 these days(??? Don't quote me on that). If you're gaming at 1440p you should see benefit from a more powerful GPU. Possibly either a used 1080Ti or 2070/2080 "Super".

Though with $1500 you could grab a Ryzen 3?00 CPU + Motherboard + new GPU. I'd personally do the GPU upgrade first and then see how you go with the CPU.

Might be worthwhile opening up MSI Afterburner while you're playing games and viewing your GPU and CPU usage in the games and see what's limiting your performance.

My current build.

Ah, custom loop?... Well new block will be an extra $100 or so + anything else you might need if you're planning on keeping the loop, so keep that in mind for your budget.

Yea, with my custom loop I just figure if just changing the the GPU only would work? like using that $1500 towards a GPU and waterblock. Its just a matter of selecting the right GPU.  If i change CPU, Motherboard, and GPU i am looking at the cost  also of waterblocks for each of them which is way over the budget i have.

That's not a good reason to upgrade.  I skimmed the posts and couldn't tell if there was anything your computer couldn't do.

If your computer is good now, save your money until you can't do what you want to do or until it's not enjoyable anymore.

Try using a Display Driver Uninstaller is you haven't already.  I only update when there is a significant update or a new game I'm playing doesn't work correctly.  I'd still stick with what you have until you can't play the games you want to at the settings you want.  If you upgrade before you need you won't notice as much of a difference and the "wow look at what this new computer can do" doesn't happen or is diminished.  I've upgraded three times over the past three years and I never noticed the increase in performance because my previous computer performed too well to notice the upgrade.
