Ok - so, quick thing for anyone reading: it's relatively easy to sideload the Play Store onto the Fire Tablet - it's not piracy or anything, it's just Android's open-source and free-ness that lets this happen, so take that into consideration when thinking about purchasing.

In other news: walmart wtf

How is "ROM" storage? Does all the data home preloaded on the ROM? Otherwise, it seems pretty silly to have storage you can't write to.

PS: Expandable via uSD.

I dunno if I'd seek out an Android tablet from the get-go, but installing the Android x86 project on my old ASUS Transformer Book basically brought it back from the dead, it was almost unusable with Win 8. Now it's excellent.

I'm pretty sure my purpose in life is to serve as a warning for others.

Linus just finished watching My Little Pony. @LukeSavenije

Also shown:

  • 2 Other kid shows

Solution:
Linus like most people only has a Netflix account for the amount of kid friendly content.

I was looking for something for around the house. I ended up getting a Nokia 3.2 with a 6.26" screen as "tablet" instead of a new tablet. In part because it is one of the few devices that are not vulnerable to Spectre, Meltdown and their relatives. The Nokia 3.2 is around €145,- It comes with guaranteed updates for at least 3 years, and it runs pretty stock Android. I wish Nokia would make tablets. With Chromecast it is possible to couple this to a bigger touch screen for example. Unfortunately some higher Nokia models have USB-C, but (some if not all) don't connect to monitors from what I understood. However that is a signifcantly different price range than I was looking for to do with this. Also they tend to have smaller screens. I promised myself never to buy a Samsung again, Lenovo reportedly has issues upgrading their stuff. Google has been working on the update thing contractually requiring manufacturers to update, Apple and Microsoft do this better. At times during the search for a new tablet I really wish there were more Linux based solutions around, but they are just hard to come by in the tablet space unfortunately. It's a shame, Linux seems to be losing in this space.

However, I found it really hard to find a decent tablet. Have been using iPad before, but switching between MS, Android, and Apple, and maintaining all that, well it can be a hassle. Even though it has a bit smaller screen than some tablets (Ipad Mini 2 has 8" and Samsung Tab 7 has 7" for example) I can always cast to Chromecast if I want to watch on a bigger screen. It handles the games I play decently for example.I did consider a 10" or bigger tablet, but those are,  really hard to find with the features, quality, and price that I had set for myself.

Apple isn't making ipads a.f.a.i.k. that can deal with Spectre, and a lot of Android/Windows tablets can't either from a hardware perspective. I wanted something more than just a software solution for new hardware. That could take years with some of the other chips, so this seemed a good middle of the road. I did find some tablets, but they were from brands I didn't know or like (e.g. not update regularly), didn't meet quality, or way more expensive for example. Nokia is a brand I know, will update Android for at least 3 years with security updates.

It's a shame because I love tablets, like the iPad mini, they are a handy size to have around.
