Intel used prices are awful, can Zen save us?

Yes I keep hardware and will sell as a running system occasionally. I like to keep spares for my systems for troubleshooting anyway.

So you do sell them, and if you were updating your main gaming rig or whatever you use for your main workload, you'd probably sell the old parts wouldn't you? Perhaps not I guess. Like I said this is what most people I've met prefer so if I'm an outlier I live in an area with quite a few outliers. And the people all selling solo parts on eBay from their upgrades, they're all outliers too?

The used part stock on eBay comes from people upgrading their systems, it's not crazy to believe people would buy a new part and sell the old one, it's very common.

Most sellers are selling parts from bulk business machines purchased wholesale and parted out. I would bet eBay shopper outnumber sellers by threefold.

I only sell on Craigslist and to friends at very low prices to clear out space. Point is I don't upgrade and sell to offset the cost.

Well, the ones who are selling wholesale are clearly the ES CPUs that are flooding the market, you can get those by the dozen, but the legit consumer chips are solo, and many bids as well. Doesn't strike me as a wholesale type of stock if they all go one at a time.

Check techyescity's recent video on Asian wholesale breakers. That's one the do it. Another is buying auction from government agencies. If it's newer than 4 generations then yes it's probably private sellers offloading their "old" parts to sooth a shrinking epeen.

I'm buying all (nationally) local so I don't see the Asian wholesalers stock.

And still, what about the off the shelf motherboards to accompany these CPUs? Tons of Z270 and the like are also circulating, definitely not from OEM machines.

Isn't the whole point of this thread upgrading your brother's Mobo that's already in hand?

If starting from scratch then new with warranty is more economical and less liability, but that's another thread.

I'd like to upgrade using the existing motherboard and not pay out the ass, cake and eat it too and all that. If he was in need of an upgrade due to a performance deficit, I'd have outfitted him with something much more capable by now. Ideally, when that time comes, I hope a 7700 can be bought for a lot closer to $100 and not $250 because otherwise it's Ryzen all the way.

Are those prices actually bad?

Intel used prices are so bad that I am amazed anyone buys anything used. i7-3770k would run me $140 or so on eBay right now. I could find it cheaper by a few dollars if I waited for a good auction, and I could possibly get it cheaper if I went for a sketchier marketplace like Reddit. I've never really considered upgrading my CPU at all, it just doesn't make sense when the CPU/mobo/RAM combo for an entry level Zen 2 build can be had under $400. There's a big premium for the "best CPU on X older platform" market for sure.

In the case of my friend with a G4560 it makes more sense for him to buy a used 7700 than a whole new system to replace his 2 year old system.

That's why you get an i7-2600k for $75. Same socket nearly the same perf. Buying new is about value, that's why u make smart choices instead of buying the "best" used parts.

Even less of a difference over my 2500k, though. Same IPC, nearly the same core clocks (might get 100MHz more I think), still investing a whole lot of money into a slight upgrade on a dead platform. I could see upgrading being worthwhile if someone had an i3 and moving to some locked i7 CPU, but that's about it in my eyes.

I come from a place running an Athlon XP 3000+ from 12 years. Then FX 4300. Then OEM lenovo upgraded from i3 2100 to i7 2600. Finally I have my X58 system. Baby steps that didnt cost too much with the excpeption of the FX system, that was a HUGE mistake. Finally thinking about Ryzen 3 all brand new in my case with my PSU and SSD.

Used can be economical when you don't have funds to shell out for new, or you have something to start with. I am divorced now and dont have a purchasing clerk to veto all my decisions so my next system will be new and highe end enough that I wont have to upgrade for 4 gens. That's really all the "futureproofing" you can ask for.

Sold my delided 3770k for 150 about two years ago. If that’s the budget people are working with, prolly best to go amd. Doesn’t perform enough at that price range for me. If it did I’d keep my old i7’s instead of making new systems. The only reason I didn't feel bad selling my 4790k for $300 was because it was a pretty slick gold sample, otherwise I considered selling it for like $125 just because I didn't think the market rate of over $200 was any sensible.

Honestly, I don't think so. They're two different buyers. People who want Intel will generally pay more for that, and as a result, the used market holds stronger pricing.

Also, using eBay to judge pricing isn't a great way to go about it. eBay is very, very rarely the best place to get used computer hardware. It's too often overpriced.
