New Nvidia Shield TV Could Be Incoming Which Will Be Running On Android 9

The Internet code detleuths at XDA developer has found several references to the new Nvidia Shield TV hardware with the name "mdarcy".

References in the Google Play Developer console seem to suggest this means there is a new and slightly refreshed version of Nvidia Shield TV, coming with the same Tegra X1 chipset, but powered by Android 9.

This new information gives credence to a hardware leak in March in which the XDA developer saw the code name for the new Nvidia Shield controller and remote.

It is estimated that all this information only shows a small update and refreshment of the 2017 version of Nvidia Shield TV rather than a new generation leap to Nvidia Shield 2.

But there are some suggestions that the new model will include some adjustments to the chipset that allow it to support better power usage and increase the maximum GPU clock speed - which means more power behind old hardware.

The addition of Android 9 will also help improve software settings and performance of the Nvidia Shield Experience software as well.

Most of this is speculation at this point and we have to wait on the official news. We loved the Nvidia Shield TV technology in the past and the update will definitely be welcomed.

Nvidia shield looked ok, but I could just never have a reason for buying one.

oh neat, hope the old one gets android 9 as well, just got one...

i love how the volume control is touch based.

Apple TVs are just too polished to justify most other alternatives. Especially since Amazon and Google are playing nice now

It's been 4 years and they are launching a minor refresh? Of a product that is no longer competitive when you can get a 4k HDR stick from Amazon or Roku for $50. 

 

Uhm wut. They better be selling these for $40.

amazon and roku dont support IPTV apps, which for me personally and the people i know is huge.

Picked one up in an xmas sale a few years back and its actually a really nice bit of kit.. I basically just use it for movies and tv shows and so on.. but if i am away from home for work or holiday i also take it along with me as you can run Steam games on there via the Steam streaming service and its really good as long as you have a half decent internet connection..

Think I paid £150 for it and it was well worth that.. I guess my only little gripe is the apps like Netflix don't support Dolby Atmos :( but yeah thats not exactly a massive deal breaker haha

I love my Shield TV, it's honestly the best Android box available bar none.

 

Since I have the 2015 model I might sell it and upgrade to the 2019 version, I skipped the 2017 version because other than the controller it was exactly the same however I'm starting to worry it's getting old so this is perfect timing for me.

 

Bit of a coincidence we get rumours that a more powerful switch is coming and a new shield TV is coming a week apart.

No, not going to happen. Nintendo wrote their own operating system including system libraries from scratch.

 

What could possibly happen is a HLE with translation APIs but afaik no one is working on that at all. Switch emulation is still very much early life.
