I was looking to save money on my PC by buying parts used. What components are safe to be bought used?

RAM can be pretty safely bought used

Ryzen 7 3700X / 16GB RAM / Optane SSD / GTX 1650 / Solus Linux

Any component depending how used is that product. It all depends on the age of the product and what the product is.

RAM is the safest

 

CPUs are durable as outlast boards all the time, but prone to getting fakes and scams.

 

Boards are alright as long as you know the model and its not too old.

 

Air cooler is safe, apart from physical damage at worst they rust. Imo being dirty is a bigger problem

 

Liquid coolers aren't safe. If they're old or not treated well, they leak.

 

Storage drives, regardless of HDD or SSD, carry some risk. You could get a worn out one that dont last long. HDDs are also prone to physical damage.

 

Fans are fine. Dont really break without being noticeable (i.e. blade snapping)

 

Case is alright, you get what you can see from your eyes.

 

GPU will depend on the exact model you're talking about. AMD RX 500 and older cards are used in crypto mining, in other words heavy load 24/7 for months if not years. They usually dont fail catastrophically, but at least the fans will be worn out and you'll have to replace them. Also a graphics card has a lot of components in it, increasing chance of failure even if it's not used in mining. I'd give it a medium risk for buying used.

Just stay off old hard drives and SSDs and be weary of PSUs. The rest is good

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...
